You're missing the point of what Jesus said about earthquakes and wars. He wasn't listing a bunch of things to look for that would tip the observer off as to when he would be more likely to return: our leading indicators are way, way up meaning that he is now probably in a near earth orbit.

Jesus himself gave the context for this:

"But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be."--Matthew 24:37-39

Wars and rumors of wars, nation rising against nation, kingdom against kingdom, famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in diverse places are all business as usual. This is the way that it's been going on throughout history. Things are going to be going along as usual until very near the end. Then the completely unusual tribulation and the stars falling from the sky and the sun and moon being darkened and the Son of Man returning, visible to the entire earth's population, are those things Jesus mentioned as showing the end of the age was near, even at the doors. As he said about the days of Noah, that everything was going along as usual until cataclysm was upon them, he said it would be like that at the end of this age.
