WASHINGTON, Jan. 12, 2010 – Iraqi soldiers arrested a suspected terrorist cell member and two suspected criminal accomplices during a combined security operation Jan. 8 in northeastern Baghdad, officials reported today.

The soldiers, with U.S. military advisors, searched a home for the suspected cell member, who uses homemade bombs, assault rifles, pistols and rocket-propelled grenades in attacks against security forces in Iraq. The security team found several assault rifles, two pistols and false documents at the scene of the operation.

Also on Jan. 8, Iraqi forces arrested two suspected al-Qaida in Iraq members and an alleged terrorist associate during a series of combined security operations in central Iraq.

During an operation conducted in southwestern Baghdad, Iraqi forces, with U.S. advisors, searched several homes for a member of a terrorist vehicle-bomb cell who allegedly is planning future attacks against government officials.

Based on preliminary questioning and evidence gathered at the scene, forces arrested one suspected associate of the cell.

Elsewhere, Iraqi forces, with U.S. advisors, searched multiple buildings for members of a bomb-making cell operating along the Euphrates River Valley.

The combined security team questioned several people and positively identified two men suspected of bombing attacks against Iraqi civilians and government officials. Forces arrested the suspects based on evidence found at the scene.
