I'm confused. Isn't Haiti one of two countries on the island of Hispaniola?

Did the quake only effect the Haitian end of the island?

Or could it be that we're seeing another media production like New Orleans and Katrina?

Obviously the quake affected Dominica but Dominica isn’t under UN control and is actually thriving. They’ll survive and rebuild, Haiti will suffer and the UN will collect money.

No- it’s not a Katrina moment in that sense. They felt it in the DR but there’s no really awful damage like in Haiti. If there’s an earthquake in San Francisco, LA isn’t going to be ruined too.

I believe the Dominican Republic was spared.

It appears the Dominican Republic did not receive anything close to the worst of it.

From the looks of the USGS’s map, Port Au Prince is at the eastern end of the epicenter. Not too far out from there, the magnitude dissipates a good bit.

I can’t get the map to blow up very large on my computer, but at the border between Haiti and the D.R. the intensity appears to be in the “moderate” range. Directly over the capital of Haiti, though, it is bright red and is clearly in the “Extreme” range.

So, it is entirely possible that this is primarily a “Haiti only” disaster.

Media production? Over 1800 of your fellow citizens were killed and damages exceeded $100 billion.

Here's a USGS "shake map." It gives an idea of the overall damage zone.

Most excellent question that I’ve been wondering about also. Thanks for posting.

It could be both Jack. The quake was practically right under Port au Prince. Dominican Republic is the other country, they got shook pretty good, people running and freaking, but it wasn’t a direct hit.

Are you actually being serious? I certainly hope not.

______
______
______

The whole island is under a whammy. Voodoo curses. Santeria curses. Bad juju there from generations of mucking about with the dark side
Yes Haiti and Dominican Republic both occupy Hispaniola which I think is where Columbus landed first

The earthquake happened almost directly under the capital of Haiti. The western part of the Dominican Republic is only lightly inhabited with a national park covering much of the territory.

The capital of the Dominican Republic is almost 150 miles away.

A colleague from the DR, called his parents last night (US time). They live in Santo Domingo (DR’s capital) and said that while they felt the quake’s shock, no real damage was done. Almost all of the damage occurred in Haiti, on the western end of the island of Hispaniola.
