But DADT doesn't keep gays from serving in the military. In fact it explicitly says that gays can serve as long as they don't tell. The only thing it does is forbid telling, which can either be used to screw the military (e.g. let the military pay for your medical training and then say you're gay) or to screw the soldier (e.g. ignore his or her homosexuality for years and then discharge him before he becomes eligible for benefits).

The irony is: Being HIV-positive while straight is not necessarily a reason for a discharge, whereas saying you're gay is.

It's the same absurd thinking as with hate crime legislation. As if it were something different if I shot a gay guy for fun. Of course it's wrong. BUT NOT because the guy is gay. It's because you don't shoot people for fun. Everything else follows from that.
