Boehner Plans 'Contract With America' Redux 39 mins ago
Minority Leader John A. Boehner told House Republicans Wednesday that he plans to write a campaign platform this year that will inevitably invite comparisons with the "Contract With America" that the GOP used to win control of the House in 1994.
With Republicans feeling increasingly optimistic about their prospects in November's mid-term elections, one source who attended the morning meeting said Boehner, R-Ohio, told Republicans he has assigned Chief Deputy Whip Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., to head up the platform-writing effort, in conjunction with the National Republican Congressional Committee, the campaign arm of the House GOP.
Boehner said the idea of a common platform for GOP candidates, with pledges they would keep if Republicans take back the House in November, had been discussed among top GOP leaders. Boehner said "that the effort -- whether it ends up being called a 'contract' or an agenda or something else -- would involve members of the conference and our candidates."
Republicans, who have 178 members in the House, feel they have strong political momentum, given an unemployment rate of 10 percent, negative poll ratings of the Democrats' health care overhaul and increasing voter alarm about government spending and record deficits.
Democrats label Republicans "the party of no," saying the minority only opposes Democratic initiatives and doesn't offer positive initiatives. Boehner's plan is an effort to blunt that criticism and give candidates a series of positive talking points on big issues.
In 1994, House Republican Newt Gingrich of Georgia, then his party's whip, used a 10-point Contract with America to unseat the Democratic majority that had controlled the House for four decades. Republicans kept their majority until 2006.

Wow, that's the biggest surprise since that big bright yellow thing appeared on the eastern horizon this morning....
“with pledges they would keep....” fool me once....
Gee...I wonder how long it’s going to take for the D-bag party to call it “The Contract on America”.
You got a yellow unicorn this morning! Awesome! Mine is purple.
“We’re not out of touch with our base... just tell us what you want us to say and we’ll say it!”
It must be election time. The GOP is throwing out a small verbal bone to conservatives. I’m all for democrat demise.
But to give these GOP hack leaders power again without leadership change is asking for more of the same.
Gain the power, but change the leadership.

She was 46. Sudden. Last weekend. She worked on the 1st Contract with America.
A new contract with America? Wow, what a great idea! Better idea: actually enact it this time!
If they put in there where we hang traitors like in the “good ole days”, I’m all in!
The U.S. Constitution is the Contract with America, congressman. Get busy honoring it and quit spending valuable time and energy with campaign marketing schemes.
Got that, Mr. Boner?
To be fair, they DID enact most of it last time.
Still waiting for those term limits and balanced budgets.
Dear John,
Suggestion #1 for your Contract: Stop being b---boys for a Marxist faux president.
The House did what they said and passed the Contract in the first 100 days.
“with pledges they would keep and if they didn’t, a pledge that they would resign immediately”
Plank One: Repeal Obamacare. Plank Two: Repeal the Stimulus. Plank Three: Repeal the other stimulus. Plank Four: Repeal the bailouts. Plank Five: Repeal the Carbon Tax. Et cetera.
