Not quite what happened. Jay wanted to retire, Conan came in, NBC’s numbers tanked, they waved tons of money at Jay to come back but he refused to take the Tonight Show back, they gave him another show instead.
Jay’s “early” show was announced in December of 2008, it was going to happen no matter what Conan’s ratings were.
