The presidents of the nine Massachusetts state colleges today called on the state Board of Higher Education to approve a UMass proposal to create the Commonwealth’s first public law school.

A public law school would create an “affordable pathway that allows for and encourages the pursuit of public service careers in the law,” the presidents said in a letter to Board of Higher education chairman Charles Desmond and higher education Commissioner Richard Freeland.

Under the UMass plan, the school would be part of UMass-Dartmouth. The nearby private Southern New England School of Law is donating its campus and assets to UMass, which plans to increase enrollment to sustain a public law school

Who needs more lawyers? Especially when states (including MA) have big budget deficits, this is an absurd waste of money.

Maybe they hope they can replace Martha Coakley with a competent attorney sometime this decade!

Exactly what the country needs! Lower the barriers to entry for law school so we can have LOTS more lawyers with even LESS of an education!

Sheesh.

Clearly it will be a breeding ground for more “public servants”.As well as “slip & fall” lawyers.

Law school would bore me. I’m waiting for them to open a public brain surgery school.

Why not? It’s been obvious from our congresscritters that law schools have long ago thrown away their standards.

Kennedy? Obama? Give me a break. Those loons couldn’t run a McDonalds......but somehow got degrees from a prestigious school? Error, error.........

Oops, my apologies to McD managers. One of the best things we could do to the small-brained nonachievers in our public service sector would be to let them see just how complicated it is to run even a small fast food establishment.

Kennedy et al couldn’t do it.

The constitution was 14 pages. As long as new law grows to 2000 pages and more, there will be demand for "public" lawyers.

BTW, I say 'was' 14 pages; effectively today the constitution is thousands of pages.
