At the very beginning of the new year, the reporters learned from the South China Sea drilling ground that the new-type warships including the No. 171 guided-missile destroyer and the No. 570 guided-missile frigate which ever fulfilled escort tasks in the Gulf of Aden had again accomplished the missile launching task in the complicated electromagnetic environment.

Surface ships are the main battle weapons which can best display the image of a navy. In recent years, the equipment of the surface ship force of the Navy of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has been enjoying rapid development with the service of the third-generation of guided-missile destroyers, frigates, new-type guided-missile speedboats, large landing ships, mine sweepers and ocean-going comprehensive supply ships in succession.

With the successful surmounting of technical difficulties on anti-submarine, anti-ship, air defense and electronic confrontation, the shipboard equipment of the new-type warships has been entirely updated and thus the information construction of the main battle weapons of the PLA Navy has made a great leap forward.

Since 2009, PLA Navy's new-type surface ships such as the No. 171, No. 169 destroyers and the No. 570 frigate have been dispatched to the Gulf of Aden and the waters off Somali coast to implement escort tasks. The home-made equipment and the officers and men in the escort taskforce went through the tests of operation with long duration, high intensity and heavy workload in the awfully hot, highly saline and highly moist environment. The first escort taskforce created a new record by maneuvering on sea for 124 days without berthing for replenishment and accumulated rich experience in ocean-going comprehensive supply.

New-type missile speedboats, large landing ships, destroyers and frigates sailing into the ocean to carry out joint training has become a normality for the PLA Navy.

Seems that years of sending scrap metal to China, probably soon followed by that from the Cash from Clunkers program of Obama’s, has just been used by China to enhance their power and abilities to build up their fleet of warships.

Any guesses as to how long it may be before there is a significant confrontation between China and Japan, Taiwan, the US or some other country? It’s coming.
