Denver Public Schools apologized Tuesday for what it called a "well-intentioned but highly insensitive" attempt to honor the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Friday's DPS lunch menu, headlined "In Honor Of M.L. King," offered students "Southern Style" chicken and collard greens — a meal that some say is an offensive caricature of black culture.

In a statement issued Tuesday night and posted on the school district's website, DPS spokesman Michael Vaughn said the meal was "highly insensitive in light of certain hurtful cultural stereotypes still harbored in parts of our society."

For those with sensitive stomachs.

And yet, we no longer celebrate our first President, George Washington. A man of courage and honor!

Wasn't a communist or womanizer.

It sounds like some people are worrying more about being “hurtful” and “insensitive” than they are about educating their charges.

"For me, it's heartbreaking for Dr. King and all he did and what he is about is now reduced to the 'I Have a Dream' speech and now chicken," she said.

"It's very upsetting. If that is the message young people are receiving, then why have a holiday?"

To the government, Jesus has been reduced to being an advocate for socialized medicine and a holiday that cannot even bear his name, just "Holiday".

What BS! It is traditional food for black Americans, it was also one of the healthiest diets ever in the US, now it is unfortunately Mcd’s and it is one of the worst diets in America. They were way better off before they gave up their traditional cuisine!

I AM OUTRAGED!

Collard greens taste ucky.

However, I kind of like the idea of going with a regional food theme, done elsewhere in the year. There is potential for some tasty meals in there.

But collard greens? Ick. Feh.

“Wasn’t a communist or womanizer.”

No, but he was an evil white priviledged slave owner whose name should be stricken from the history books so sensitive young minds wouldn’t be subjected to the horrors of early American history.

(Yes, this is extreem sarcasm)
