Ted Turner Advises CNN Not to Follow Fox News Opinion Model
NewsBusters ^ | January 14, 2010 | Jeff Poor

Since Lou Dobbs left CNN in November, citing a mutual agreement between he and CNN President Jonathan Klein that involved CNN going in a different direction, CNN's ratings have plummeted.

But Ted Turner, founder of the first truly 24-hour cable news channel, doesn't see anything wrong with the channel's heading. CNBC's Joe Kernen asked Turner if he had any problems with CNN's direction during a "Squawk Box" appearance Jan. 14.

"I know you love CNN," Kernen said. "It's your baby. I know you're not involved in running it anymore, but when you look at the way Fox News in 10 years has sort of risen above CNN in terms of ratings and profitability and other metrics, would you advise - should CNN stay the course with their idea it's just straight news, or do they need to change with the times and become more opinion-based."

MSNBC is all opinion all day and their ratings are in the dumpster. It’s not just having opinions Ted, it’s having opinions that make sense.

Don't ya know Liberal heads will explode when CNN, for strickly financial survival, has to include a true Conservative or two in their evening lineup.

CNN can only bleed for so long.

I would have asked Ted Turner hard journalistic questions:

"How much money have you given to the UN, after you pledged a billion dollars? Or did you just pledge specifically for tax purposes?"

should CNN stay the course with their idea it's just straight news, or do they need to change with the times and become more opinion-based."

CNN LED THE WAY in opinion-based news. ABC, NBC, and CBS followed suit. Then all the other spinoffs like MSNBC, et al followed and even passed CNN in terms of being the propaganda arm of the DNC. Fox News has a lot of opinion shows, but at least it's news department features reporters and commentary from both sides of the divide.

I don't think CNN has to go opinion based to win back an audience, I just think they need to broadcast NEWS 24-7.

N E W S

They have the WHOLE WORLD to draw interesting NEWS programs from ... and instead of covering the NEWS they have maybe 10 hour of actual news programs they that just repeat 20 times a day, unless something spectacular is occurring like an election or a disaster. And they are so freaking lazy they don't do ANY news coverage at all on the weekends anymore, you have to wait till Monday to see what happened over the weekend most of the time, it's ridiculous.

CNN is still #1 for breaking news coverage though.
FOX had zilch on the earthquake and on the Fort Hood shootings initially.
I think if CNN wants to rebound, they should first update their cheesy 1980s TV graphics, and then focus on breaking news and hard news more and get rid of Anderson Cooper
