Central Business District Resembles Hell On Earth As Bodies Pile Up And Armed Men Battle Over Food, Supplies

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (CBS) The earthquake aftermath has brought out the best and worst of the people of Haiti.

Much like the days after Hurricane Katrina, looting has become a problem very quickly.

The looting appears to be isolated to Port-au-Prince's old commercial center. It's an area that under normal circumstances would be filled with many shops, markets and a few homes. But on Wednesday it was a completely different scene.

It looked like a war zone.

Some of the buildings were on fire. Smoke was everywhere and there were bodies in the streets, many just quake victims lying where they were when the magnitude 7.0 blast hit.

What made the situation that much more tense was sightings of gangs of young men with machetes. On Wednesday they were seen getting into stores and taking all the supplies they could carry. The armed men were seen marching up and down the streets with machetes raised and the competition among the gangs turned quite fierce.

Fights between gangs were seen on the streets. Machetes were flailing and it was impossible to predict what would happen next.

There was no sign of police or any kind of law and order.

Ask the people in that city, would you rather have a policeman’s phone number or a gun?

The problem is that most people, in most cities, just don't understand how fragile the law and order is. When disasters strike all that goes down even before the last brick reaches the ground. Some people just go insane; other people will do anything for their family; some other people will kill to get rich, or just for fun. After a major disaster they can get away with a lot of killing.

So if you ask a typical city dweller, he will tell you that a cell phone is all he needs. He just has no experience and makes his choice based on fantasy, not on realities of life.

Oh, please. They were looting for beer and televisions in New Orleans. The two situations should not even be mentioned in the same paragraph.

I recall Christ being asked about the people who had died when a tower fell on them, what had they done to bring this about. His answer was were all sinners and deserved to have towers falling.

I’m beginning to believe this specific behavior is genetically predetermined.

Looks like Cobra gunships may be in order as the situation deteriorates..

I hope our troops at least have ammo and aren’t just carrying empty magazines.

Jamaica is overwhelmingly Christian, yet is no safe place for any white man.

Christianity has NOTHING to do with whether or not a society is civilized. Your secular yuppie is much more of a contributor and less of a leach than the overwhelmingly Christian ghetto dwellers. If you look at sectors of the population that are overwhelmingly religious versus those that are secular, and then see which ones are committing most of our violent crime, you would come to a different conclusion than that you have currently.

Education and IQ are better indicators of the chance of one becoming a violent sociopath than belief in Jesus, Allah, or any of the other sky-gods.

Only one way to deal with this sort of thing: shoot to kill. After a while, the yutes will get the message.

And wandering around menacingly holding a mechete up high seems like a volunteer for the lesson...

Wish I could site the source of this debate...

a Christian apologetic asks an atheist...

if your car breaks down in the middle of southcentral LA at 10pm, would you prefer the first people you see are a group of young men coming from a Bible study, or some other group of young men, which would you chose...

the atheist admitted that the first choice was better...

what’s your choice?

Agreed - but think it is even worse. There will be a group of people who understand their dependency but don't acknowledge it, and a group who expect their dependency. The former will afford patience and apply reason to a dire situation even if they have failed to prepare, the latter will not.

And then there are those who are opportunists - apparently never got a chance to run for congress - but will bleed whatever they can from a crisis just because the opportunity arose...

What, no word from the high IQ atheist to those of us who by virtue of being believers must be stupid?

I never doubt the intelligence of a non-believer...

anyone who is earnestly seeking and hungry for Truth will find it in the one whose name is Truth.

When you think about it, the cell phone is probably one of the greatest crime fighting tools there is.

But in this case...
There was no sign of police or any kind of law and order.

Better to be well armed with something considerably more effective than a machete.

On a personal note when the SHTF and it happens here. There will be a pile of skulls a short way away from my bug in location with a sign saying “free food and water”. That should cut down on the foot traffic.

Yesterday, my husband, walking back to his office after lunch, was almost run over by a guy. When DH yelled at him to watch where he was going, the guy backed up and nearly ran over his foot. DH pounded on the car. Driver yells, “Now I am going to get you good!” and gets out of the car. DH held up his cell phone, asked the guy to smile for the camera and not to forget the ones on poles. The driver looked around, by-standers were smiling and he got back into the car and left the scene.

What no one else knew was that my husband always carries a knife. He had his hand on it inside his pocket and he knows how to use it quickly and to effect.

But, for this incident, in a peaceful American city, the cell phone camera worked well.

if society actually FOLLOWS their religious tenets, then it does affect civilization...

you can't call people who swing machetes and maim and kill particularly spiritual...
