The only firearms I saw down there were pistol gripped shotguns owned by the military and security. Those guys were born with machetes in their hands, though, and they take each other out with them a LOT.

In third world places like Haiti and New Orleans, the cop is probably going to rob you too!

The problem is that most people, in most cities, just don't understand how fragile the law and order is. When disasters strike all that goes down even before the last brick reaches the ground. Some people just go insane; other people will do anything for their family; some other people will kill to get rich, or just for fun. After a major disaster they can get away with a lot of killing.

So if you ask a typical city dweller, he will tell you that a cell phone is all he needs. He just has no experience and makes his choice based on fantasy, not on realities of life.

On a personal note when the SHTF and it happens here. There will be a pile of skulls a short way away from my bug in location with a sign saying “free food and water”. That should cut down on the foot traffic.
