NEWBURGH – City officials say Newburgh will participate in Orange County’s latest gun buyback program on January 16 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

The buyback program is part of a countywide effort to get guns off the streets and keep them out of dangerous hands. In exchange for the weapons being turned in, no questions asked, the person turning the gun in will receive Shoprite gift cards. They range from $25 to $150 depending upon the condition and type of weapon turned in.

Since this program began in the county, over 100 weapons have been recovered.

Mayor Nicholas Valentine said the buyback is not an intrusion. This is about protecting the people in your own community. That’s really what it’s about; we’re not after trying to catch somebody. We’re after trying to get the guns off the street.”

Orange County Sheriff Carl Dubois said the county is not alone with the gun problem. “You look up and down, at least from what I see, the east coast and the megalopolis that stretches down from Portland, Maine all the way down to Florida, and that I-95 corridor, there’s a problem with guns. There are a lot of guns going back and forth,” Dubois said.

Newburgh Police Chief Eric Paolilli acknowledged that bad guys are not going to turn in weapons, but family members might. “If there is a mother or a father or a sister or brother out there who knows there is a gun being secreted in the house and in the heat of the moment could be taken out and used again another person, bring it to us.”

The county’s gun buyback program will also be in the cities of Port Jervis and Middletown.

Sounds like political posturing for a photo opportunity. I am no seeing where this program would really do anything except create some family arguments.

Sounds more like a formula for more murders. A gang-member is going to kill somebody who turns in their gun.

I guess when you turn in a gun, you have to fill out a form telling your name and address too, huh? Carbon copies probably find their way into the underground too, so they'll know who is no longer armed.

No telling where the guns go...probably a "redistribution of firearms".

I wonder if they're still giving $50 for those $20 B-B guns?

Why can’t they hold one of these in Dallas? I would love to stop by and buy some (probably decent) firearms for $100.

Want to make our streets safer? Take the guns away from the BATFE, FBI, IRS, DOJ, and the rest of Homeland Security. Leave the guns that are in the hands of the citizens alone.

After the Heller case, and the huge spike in gun sales, the violent crime rate has gone down dramatically. Yet, these political wastes of breathing air still want to disarm us. What may I ask is the true agenda? (as if I didn’t know...)

These gun buy-back programs are silly.

Newburgh’s a hell-hole. How ironic that the a couple of days before the gun buyback, the city closes the public schools tomorrow (Friday) because of a 13-year old stabbing someone to death with a knife.

Maybe they need a knife buyback program now.

Read all about it...

If they wait one week they can go to the Bronx and get $200 cash for ANY operable gun regardless of condition through the NYPD buy back.
