Noemie Emery: Obama's Education of Little Use to His Presidency
The Washington Examiner ^ | January 13, 2010 | Noemie Emery

David Brooks notes that in the last year, something dire has happened: The public has turned decisively against the "educated classes" and all of their works. At the same time, it has also moved against Barack Obama, who began his term with approval ratings that bumped up against 70, and have now sunk to the high to mid-40s, with "strongly disapprove" ratings that rival those of George W. Bush at his worst.

It has also moved strongly against his — and the educated classes' — ideas. It is more pro-life, more anti-climate change, more free market, less statist, more inclined to favor "harsh" measures against terrorism suspects, more in favor of "waterboarding" the terrorist caught in the brief-bombing effort, more opposed to the closing of Guantanamo Bay.

While the liberal Left controls the White House along with both houses of Congress, the country it governs has moved to the Right. These phenomena are all interrelated: The country is moving Right in reaction to Obama's theories of governance, and Obama and the educated class are one and the same.

And what does this say? That our "educated class" is educated beyond its intelligence, and mistakes mastery of its patois and attitude for wisdom and competence.

Interesting, upbeat analysis!

The Beltway Elite is discovering Obama isn't their savior.

What is the “educated class”? Anyone with a high school degree? Or is it those who just think they’re smarter than everyone else, “educated” or not?

Never confuse schooling with education.

There are a whole bunch of ways to become educated. Some involve formal schooling.

Several of our most effective presidents, among them Washington, Lincoln, Jackson, had little or no formal schooling.

See my tagline! Just as you can lead a horse to water but can’t make him drink, so also you can send Obama to college but can’t make him think. Nor the rest of the self-proclaimed “educated class” either.

Excellent read!

It is full of itself, and values too highly its skill sets, which are entertaining, but not on the optimum level of consequence... This class fooled itself, and much of the country, for which the country will not soon forgive it.

It’s true they are educated beyond its intelligence. You can send some people to school but you can’t make them learn.

Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge turned decisively against the educated classes too.

"As they chewed over the finer points of Edmund Burke, it didn't take long for the two men to click"

"He compared him to Burke in his subtle complexity"

This is a joke, right? Brookes compared Obama to Sir Edumund Burke? What next, Obama is the next Adam Smith? This just shows how stupid Brookes is. How can you compare a statist to someone who advocated for free markets and less government? Heed this warning from Burke:

"The true danger is when liberty is nibbled away, for expedience, and by parts."

I also hope this is a wake-up call.

If such a shift arises from a recognition of a greater truth than themselves, rather than simply a rejection something they don’t prefer, there would be lasting hope. Otherwise their opinion is no better than the morality of an ruling class that thinks it is their job to determine what’s right and wrong.

The vote is deceiving, both for ruler and ruled.

That our "educated class" is educated beyond its intelligence, and mistakes mastery of its patois and attitude for wisdom and competence.

That is not quite it. Our "Educated Class" is no longer "educated". They are indoctrinated. Few conservative instructors survive to be tenured. Do any conservative students survive Journalsim "education"?

What does a "Doctor of Ethnocentrism or Sexuality" contribute to _ANYTHING_?

In order for the term "Educated" to have its meaning restored, the first start should be Engine Lathe or Welding Training for "Doctors" of Journalism, HyphenAmerican "Studies", and other such scams and frauds.

Obama declared the economy to have a new invisible hand, a ‘government directed’ hand after the inaugration. Seems Brooks missed it... I didn’t.
The USA will never submit to central planning.

You have to go to the “right” universities,
but more importantly, you have to have the “right”

secular humanist elitist worldview.

That’s what it takes to be “educated”. (more like “indoctrinated”)

Progressive education doesn’t make one erudite; it makes one pedantic, like David Brooks, like Obamao, like most of the intellectual class that pollutes the world with wrongheadedness. Obamao appeals to the intellectual class because of delusions of government omniscience, but he differs from many because his reasons for creative government stem from hate, not concern. Obamao isn’t about saving America, not even in the convoluted way most of our Ivy League progressives think. Obamao is all about using government to destroy America. It’s a fine line that may confuse most intellectuals, but average Americans, endowed with common sense intelligence, are figuring it out.
