Immigration from and deportation to Haiti has been a hot-button issue for decades. It's about to get white hot. As horrific as the current crisis is, the next phase will be equally complex but arguably more controversial for United States policymakers. How will the United States -- a country that had monumental border issues waiting in the winds before the Haiti earthquake -- address the issue of, potentially, hundreds of thousands of Haitian refugees?
Already looming as the next big item for the Obama administration, immigration reform was the third stool of the Obama agenda. .... and then it will be full-throttle debate on immigration reform.
"I don't think there's going to be a lot of argument over whether we should halt deportations for Haitian illegal aliens. The question is how do we make sure this doesn't become a permanent amnesty, which is essentially what it's been for everybody else who's ever gotten it," (Mr. Krikorian) said.
Whether this helps or hinders one or the other side of the coming debate on illegal immigration remains to be seen. It will definitely add fuel to the fires of each side.
However, despite the devastation in Haiti, we still have to protect our borders and secure our citizens from those who continually attempt to come through our borders in an effort to do us harm. That door is about to be stressed and strained to an extreme degree. It must not become an opening for terrorist groups to get a foot, a leg, or worse in. To think they don't sniff out opportunities to infiltrate our country with every waking breath, is to be living in a different time.
We need to be awake and vigilant throughout the coming debate. It will likely get incredibly messy.

Obama is on record (2008) supporting Haitian immmigration.

I was just looking at this WSJ list of nations giving aid to
Haiti. only one muslim/arab country is listed, the UAE (shelter materials) not Egypt , Yemen,Saudi Arabia, etc. Such benevolence, eh?
Oh! That’s a good one. And it is getting very much colder, too. What a difference in temperatures - from tropical Haiti to Michigan!
I suspect that most Haitians will eventually want to return to Haiti.
The Haitian tragedy will be the poster child for immigration reform. If you disagree or want to debate you are racist. It is here that we need to bury this racist lable once and for all. Haitians need to stay in Haiti. The rats are looking to widen the voter base with illegals. They will use the commpassion startegy on the American public and make those who debate or disagree the enemy. We are all getting better at predicting rat startegies because of TRANSPARENCY. Us thier strategies against them, causing the “deer in the head lights” syndrome.

Umm.. they alrady fought a war in the 19th century to separate themselves from Haiti.
Really? Why? Should they not somehow be a part of rescue & rebuilding? Why would we keep them here?
Hillary and her boss have been planning on Haitian ‘amnesty’ for some time.

Clinton made clear that the United States would retain its policy of interdicting Haitians trying to reach Florida’s sun-drenched shores but said the administration was looking at its deportation practices involving Haitians, who help support their impoverished country with remittances.

‘’We are reviewing the policy, and we know what a great source of income the remittances are that flow from . . . principally the United States back to Haiti,’’ she said.
An estimated 30,000 Haitians are currently in the deportation pipeline, and immigration advocates argue it would be cruel to send them back to a storm-ravaged country struggling to recover from four back-to-back storms that left nearly $1 billion in damage.
Clinton said the administration was sympathetic to ``what a tremendous burden it would be on Haiti if all of a sudden they were forced to accommodate the thousands of people who were otherwise working in our country.
``So we expect that we will be able to look closely at this and try to come up with some appropriate responses to the challenges posed.’’
Haitian advocates want the Obama administration to add Haiti to the list of nations whose citizens here receive Temporary Protected Status. That would permit undocumented Haitian migrants to stay and work in the United States temporarily.
