BOSTON — Robert B. Parker, the blunt and beloved crime novelist who helped revive the hard-boiled genre and branded a tough guy of his own through his "Spenser" series, has died. He was 77.

An ambulance was sent to Parker’s home in Cambridge on Monday morning for reports of a sudden death, said Alexa Manocchio, spokeswoman for the Cambridge police department. The death was of natural causes and was not considered suspicious, Manocchio said.

Sorry he’s passed. He left a large volume of work but his novels have been un-readable for the past fifteen years.

Or else made to look that way ...

Seriously: RIP Mr. Parker. I remember when you came to my Literature class in college and gave a talk on creating interesting characters. You knew your stuff.

A crackerjack writer.

I have read every book of his, I believe, and they were always fun and entertaing as well as instructive.

God’s peace for Mr. Parker.

Unreadable! Every one of his books is highly readable, many of his latest have been made into films, and his writing stayed at its peak until he died. I hope he has new material in the pipeline, because I’ve read every one of his books and look forward to the next. A sad day for readers.

Very sad. Absolutely loved his novels. They were almost invariably either non-political or fairly conservative. Occasionally did a lib piece, but not too often. Could have lived without the Susan character, but loved Hawk.

Just started reading his western novels, which were also excellent. The bad guys died, and the good guys rode off into the sunset. Can’t beat that.

RIP, Mr. Parker.

I really enjoyed the Spenser and Jesse Stone novels. Would have liked to see the Stone character go further.

I will miss him also.

I’ve read every spenser novel (in order) and I really like the Jesse Stone novels.

Great reading at bedtime. He will be missed.

Another famous author who just died was Erich Segal, best known for Love Story (but also author of scholarly books in the field of Classics). The guy in Love Story was modeled after Al Gore, as I recall.

First Westlake, then Parker. When James Ellroy dies, I may have to give up fiction.

I read all the Spenser novels (38, I think) and all in order except for 2.

For so many really enjoyable hours, RIP Mr. Parker.

Michael Crighton, Stuart Woods, Robert Crais, Vince Flynn and Patrick Robinson.

I just copied your list into my library file. I've read much of Crighton but the others are new to me. Thanks!

Reading Spenser is like eating bacon for the mind. I love it!
