In honor of the 40th anniversary of the entry into service of the 747-100 with Pan Am in January 1970, Max Kingsley-Jones and I have authored a package of features commemorating the event. A box? You know, one not "Coffin" shaped. I've seen bottles in special boxes before, rectangular ones.

Coffins imply death, burial. Using a coffin to hold the bottle to christen a ship/aircraft that carries people, just seemed weird to me. Which is why I asked if there was any tradition behind it which might explain it.

Same here.

Last summer I was upgraded from coach to business on a British Airways 747 flying from Johannesburg to London. Found out while I was waiting for the check-in counters to open.

Went online and snagged a seat upstairs. What a great flight!

Beat the heck out of American Airlines and Lufthansa Business class.
