I’d sure like to know why her OB/GYN didn’t do an ultrasound (if it wasn’t done) to see about the cord being wrapped. They would have done a C-section. I hope it’s not the NHS that is the cause.

My son’s cord was wrapped twice, they caught it via ultrasound, and he was born C-section six weeks early. He just celebrated his 24th birthday last week. He’s a restaurant manager and just got his real estate license.

“he is not deserving of the treatment because even if he does survive, his life is considered futile.”

Pretty soon this will be applied to the elderly, severely disabled, etc. (shades of the Third Reich...)

My mom had a horrible OB/GYN who did not diagnose my mothers gestational diabetes and I was born 6 weeks early with an enlarged liver. I also had cancer and a tumor disorder which was unrelated, but also had mild low muscle tone.

Luckily 25 years latter all is realtivly well.

Umbilical cords can become wrapped around the neck (or limbs) during the birth process.

Though we take them for granted here, in many socialist medicine states, ultrasounds are few to non-existent.

My wife's sister lives in Sweden, and she had to travel hours to go to Stockholm to pay out of pocket for the only ultrasound available in the region. And she's a doctor.

Another one of my wife's friends gave birth to a baby (in Sweden) that suffered brain damage that could have easily been prevented if ultrasounds were part of the prenatal regimen.

“I hope it’s not the NHS that is the cause.”

Not to nitpick, but Canada does not have a National Health Service. Free access to medical care is mandated by the federal government, and partially funded by it, but the health care systems are run by the provinces. Standards and quality of care vary somewhat from province to province.

Still, this is a good example of what you get with a single-payer gov’t-run health care system. Its practioners are informed by the likely ongoing costs of caring for this child, who in their judgement will have a very poor quality of life. I’d like to say otherwise, but it appears that too often they err on the side of cost savings. The implication that they just want to kill the child for the organs is going a little too far in my opinion, however.

I wonder, are similar decisions ever made in the US by private healthcare insurers who want to control their costs. I guess one can always decide to override their decisions and pay for the chosen medical care themselves. I’m guessing doctors in the US wouldn’t be making this sort of decision, however.

I’d say allowing her to lay in labor for 40 hours was the direct result of NHS and it is their fault this little guy is in the shape he is. Why in the world wasn’t an ultrasound and c section done at the first hospital like it would be here even in the smallest hospitals? Could it be that because of the NHS the service is only avaliable in certain places? Now they want to finish him off because he is too expensive. It is criminal the power they have over people’s lives!
