Maybe they just need to seize an airfield closer to Iran.

These troop movements were announced two or three weeks ago. They are putting reserve troops in the West Bank and moving their most experienced troops as noted here.

One theory is that they might be preparing to bomb Iran, and would want their troops in place to fend off any countermoves by Iran’s friends and clients.

That’s where the main IDF push will go from what I can tell.

They have had time to move their heavy stuff to the border

by now,,,

......Wars and rumors of wars.......

What we are discussing here is not a war. We are speaking of a precursor that will precipitate the rel war with Iran.

It is to Iran’s favor for the IDF to get sidetracked in Syria. it is to the IDF advantage to immediately and with no warning attack Iran. Then Syria. Dead Syria = Dead Lebanon

that’s where all their strongholds and training bases are, so if Israel wants to take care of Hezbollah once and for all, I don’t see how they avoid moving in force into the Bekka

FWIW a follow up from the poster over at Ticker forum re movement of IDF moving north saying he hasn’t see this kind of military activity up that way since 2006

I wonder if 0bama has secretly made promises to defend the defenseless Hezbolan-Syrians against the illegal invaders of Israel with American troops?

NOTHING WILL HAPPEN.

There will be no Israeli attack, and that’s because they said they WOULD attack —bad tactics.

Watch what they do, not what they say.

The Israeli Foreign and Defense Ministries can run their mouths all they want, but if they actually start moving men and material and setting up a logistics train (as recent press releases suggest) I would pay attention.

Not saying an Israeli strike is imminent, but it now looks like it may be a viable option. If/when the IDF pulls back from the northern border, then they can talk all they want because if they aren’t deployed to address the threats along the northern border and the Golan, there is no way they IMO will strike Iran

Clinton’s warning to Iran prompts Syria, Hezbollah to go on high alert http://www.yalibnan.com/2010/01/23/c...on-high-alert/ January 23, 2010 ⋅ 5:08 am ⋅ Tensions were heightened after the press conference of Secretary of State Hilary Clinton when, on Friday, the A-Sharq al-Awsat daily paper reported that Syria and Hezbollah had gone on high alert in anticipation of an Israeli attack on Lebanon. The London-based newspaper said that Hezbollah has been alarmed by recent IDF reinforcements to the Israel – Lebanon border, and quoted Hezbollah deputy general secretary Naeem Kassem as saying that the group’s armed wing had prepared plans to retaliate. Syria has begun to mobilize reserve troops, including nationals residing in Lebanon. According to analysts , Clinton hinted in the press conference that the US has enough international support to act against the Iranian nuclear facilities just like it did in 1991 ( Gulf War) against Saddam Hussein following his occupation of Kuwait. She said that Iran had a ‘clear choice’ between isolation and ‘living up to its international obligations’ and added ‘it is important to send [the] message to the Iranian leadership, that the world will act, and the world will act together.’ French FM Bernard Kouchner said Thursday during his meeting with Lebanese P Saad Hariri “: If there was a threat to Lebanon, it will only come from a military adventure carried out by Hezbollah in the best interest of Iran” - - - - - - - - - - - - - U.S. envoy George Mitchell also visited Beirut and Damascus early this week, right before Hezbollah and Syria started cranking up their war preparations. Me thinks Clinton and Mitchell read Assad the riot act, combined with the fact the IDF was bolstering forces on the northern border and "bam" we got ourselves a tense situation developing

Sarkozy to Hariri: We Vow to Try Preventing Bombarding Basic Infrastructure, Not More

French President Nicolas Sarkozy informed Lebanese officials that “France vows to try to prevent Israel from bombarding the basic infrastructure of Lebanon, but not more than that,” stressing to those he met on the need to “control the internal Lebanese situation and prevent any provocations,” according to well-informed Lebanese sources.
Sources close to the French presidency told the pan-Arab Asharq al-Awsat daily that Sarkozy answered the concerns of PM Saad Hariri from a possible Israeli attack on Lebanon by saying “Lebanon can depend on France’s friendship and support.”

‘Israel, Hezbollah inch toward military conflict’

Israel is heading toward a confrontation with Lebanon militant organization Hezbollah, Minister without portfolio Yossi Peled said on Thursday, adding that “Israel’s main goal is to ensure the posterity of the Jewish state.”

When asked whether he believed another round of violence was expected along Israel’s northern border, the Likud minister said “yes, I just don’t know when, just like no one knew that the Second Lebanon War would break.”

Speaking at a cultural function in the southern city of Be’er Sheva, Peled said that “If a conflict does erupt in the North we will hold both Lebanon and Syria responsible.”
