Kucinich's 'Fairness Doctrine' Threat To O'Reilly: Stop Celebrating Fox News Success
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 01/23/2010 4:15:00 AM PST by governsleastgovernsbest

During George W.'s administration, liberals loved to wail over the supposed--but never demonstrated--suppression of free speech.

But now we have the spectacle of a member of the Dem majority warning a leading representative of Fox News to stop celebrating his network's success--under threat of reinstitution of the so-called "Fairness Doctrine." On last evening's Factor, Rep. Dennis Kucinich, invoking the possibility of the Fairness Doctrine's return, warned O'Reilly to stop "crowing" about Fox's success.

The Fairness Doctrine cannot survive a SCOTUS that rules as it just did in Citizens United v. FEC. Especially since the conditions of scarcity of the airwaves used to justify the Fairness Doctrine many decades ago are no longer present. Besides which, Fox is a cable channel, not a broadcast network.

Isn’t it amazing coming from a US Congressman.... “Be careful Bill....”
The people are flocking away from the Main Stream Incompetent Media and the congressman starts talking about the “Fairness Doctrine.” He more or less is stating he is going to enact a law so Fox can be just as awful as the rest of the networks.

and speaking of threats against his lively hood? Just what right do politicians have to threaten the entire American public. Especially since if they were able to repass the bad law it would come back to bite them where it hurts, and they know it.

Kucinich is an idiot. The Fairness Doctrine NEVER applied to cable entities - only over the air broadcasters.

Broadcasters of all stripes, even those on non-political programs, have been tooting their own horns about how great and popular their shows are since the dawn of commercial radio.

Mr. Kucinich is beyond goofy if he’s offended by it, or thinks that the “Fairness” Doctrine would address the “problem”.

It surprises me that one so small (Not only in stature but in mind and political philosophy) can be elected to any position. What a dork.

...”Liberals are the emeny of freedom”...

Yes..However, most of the current crop is beyond “liberal.” They are “progressives,” which is an ideology leading straight into Communism with a pitstop at Marxism. Glen Beck is doing our nation a tremendous service as he attempts to educate us about the truth of those forms of government and of how each and every one ends up. I hope everyone watched yesterday’s documentary at 5 pm. I did and I learned a lot. I will be watching next week, as well. There are just too many parallels between those cruel regimes from history and what is going on in our nation right now. How do we prevent holocausts in the future? Better think about it! This may seem a long way from the Fairness Doctrine which, of course, has nothing to do with fairness, but, instead is censorship of free speech and taking away free speech is key to the success of the “progressives.”

Dennis The Menace. I live outside Cleveland. He’ll be in Congress forever. His trolls love him. Aren’t we supposed to have a picture of his wife on these threads about him?

Typical lib, spouts freedom for everyone, but when he hears something he doesn’t like, he threatens Big Brother.

"warned O'Reilly to stop "crowing" about Fox's success. "

This is the kind of hubris that just lost them three elections, and will lose them many more this fall.

I can't wait to see how BOR takes this "warning" from Kucinich the Menace...maybe he'll work him over like he did Bwarny Fwanks.

I always thought Kucinich looked more like a jockey, a butler, or one of those driveway statutes you tie a horse to.
