Ousted president Zelaya leaving Honduras

Ousted President Manuel Zelaya confirmed he will leave Honduras and travel to the Dominican Republic next week when a new president is sworn into office.

Zelaya told Radio Globo on Saturday he will leave Honduras as a private citizen, thanks to an accord signed by President-elect Porfirio Lobo and Dominican President Leonel Fernandez.

"On the 27th of January, I will leave as a common citizen... after having completed my presidential mandate," Zelaya said.

Zelaya was ousted in a June 2009 coup during his effort to change the constitution that the Supreme Court had ruled illegal.

He still faces treason and abuse-of-power charges stemming from that campaign.

He sneaked back into the country in September to reclaim the presidency and finish out his term, but has been holed up in the Brazilian Embassy since then, facing the threat of arrest if he leaves.

The deal brokered for Zelaya's safe passage into exile on Wednesday, the day Lobo is sworn in, does not drop the charges, Honduran chief prosecutor Luis Alberto Rubi said on Saturday.

Rubi also said he is investigating Zelaya for allegedly embezzling at least $US1.5 million ($A1.66 million).

Zelaya said he is willing to return and face Honduran justice.

"I will return when the country is at peace and when honest and independent judges exist."

What’s the over/under on how many days before he’s appointed a czar in the Obama Administration?

The only justice for leaders who try to take over their governments is death. Everything else is futile.

Just to make sure that it's perfectly clear (as I am sure it is to all the regulars here at the forum): Zelaya was not "ousted in a coup" - Zelaya was removed from office legally following reasonable, legitimate measures taken to comply with the mandate of the Honduran constitution that provided that a sitting president who tried to extend his eligibility for office was automatically stripped of the presidency.

lying about this and calling it a "coup" is part of an intentional campaign of disinformation waged by the Obama Whitehouse, Hugo Chavez, and their ilk.

Zelaya to Obama: Thanks for your assistance and all, but after the Massachusetts election, I see you’re about as useful as a solar-powered flashlight...

Did Hillary arrange for his farewell address to the UN General Assembly yet?

Meanwhile, at USA insistence Honduras will put on trial the military guys who carried out the Supreme Court order to remove Zelaya from office (the took him to an airport instead of to jail).

"I will return when the country is at peace and when honest and independent judges exist."

The way Obama has been squawking about the SCOTUS, I wish he'd make this same statement & go into exile in the Dominican Republic with common citizen, Zelaya.

Translation: "When Hugo figures out a new plan for me I will be back to try another communist overthrow."
