Race has nothing to do with it. Culture does.

That is how many of us view this. But, I get the sense in my work with African-American college students that in THEIR minds, their behaviors, attitudes, etc. (culture) are a part of who they are as African-Americans. They identify it all as one, and if you don't accept their "ways", then you don't accept them as African-American.

Example: at one point, ALL the MBA business candidates at Harvard who were black, were African immigrants. They make up a very small percentage of blacks in America, yet they got ALL the top spots.

Ah, but that's only because they are pure-blooded Africans, American "blacks" are all the victims of miscegenation...</Robert KKK Byrd>

What the heck do you do with kids who get to high school and still can't read or do basic math? Educators, most who have been indoctrinated beyond belief in left-wing dominated colleges and universities, honestly think they can intervene in these situations. And they probably can make a difference here and there in the life of a kid who grew up being taught someone else "owed" them for the situation they found themselves in, and that someone else would be responsible for getting them out of it.

The money saved from getting rid of science labs will be used to try to remediate students who probably cannot be remediated because none of the other forces in their lives support them in that endeavor. What's the trade-off and what will the cost be? Is it more valuable to society to graduate a kid who will now (maybe) be able to get a minimum wage job? Or would it be more valuable to focus on the students with potential to succeed in post-secondary education? It's a good question, but we will never get a solid answer to that because the teacher's unions will manipulate the data to support the outcome they want.

it’s the same story with public education across the country. Keep dumbing down the curriculum and lowering the bar until every one can roll over it. That, and give the teachers a raise because....well just because.

Just one more very creative way the left has found to transfer money from the hard-working earners to the individuals who reliably vote democrat.

RE: disagreement over how best to help underachievers, pitting haves against have-nots, whites and Asians against blacks and Latinos.

And the damn conservatives (Republicans?) in Berkely few that they be, probably won’t help in helping underachievers, either. Conservatives usually are more interested in helping those who can’t help themselves. Liberals, Democrats, and other assorted idiots usually waste alot of time and money trying to help those who won’t help themselves.

For their purposes, they are lumping the “Asian” kids in with “White”. It serves their purpose to do so in this case.

Berkley will find that fewer “high-end achievers” (the next “rich” of the left) will want to attend their high school.

Black and Hispanic kids are not working hard enough and not in enough advanced science classes. Therefore, we must cripple the white and Asian kids to compensate.

Reap what you’ve sown, Berserkely. Choke on it.

In reality the only reason to pursue a Phd is if one wants to teach in the University arena. (or medical profession)

As one that got caught up in the education “lie” early with 4 Master degrees and a doctoral candidate that found out how political the oral boards are ... I said “enuff is enuff”

Call me a quitter? I could care less. Why screw around when I have 20 Phd’s out of 77 people that work for me. I don’t hold animmosity towards them, they are bright and have been an asset to my business ... and I commend their fortitude. The rest of my employees hold Master’s in physics and 3 MBA’s

It is a generalized statement but still holds lots of truth ... “Those that can, do. Those that can’t teach.”

This is typical liberal foolishness. The lab classes they will cut are investments in well-motivated students that provide a great return. They will instead waste the money on non-performers. They might as well burn it. The key to educational spending is “pay for performance.”
