PORTLAND, Ore. A surge of last-minute ballots was expected Tuesday as Oregon voters decided whether to impose higher taxes on businesses and the wealthy.
Polling in the special election suggested the results on Measures 66 and 67 will be close.
The stakes in the struggle between business interests and public employee unions are high the revenue from the two measures is expected to account for about 5.5 percent of the state's general fund budget over the next two years.
Opponents of the taxes say draining the money from private hands would damage the state's economy, still hurting from a recession and downturns in construction, real estate and manufacturing that have boosted Oregon's unemployment rate to 11 percent.

Does Oregon have a gross recept tax?
>> Class warfare on display.
A product of sustained high unemployment.
A few facts...
the States budget this past biennium was $4 BILLION (with a B) LARGER than the last biennium.
The State has $3 Billion (with a B) in the BANK
The State Dems cut schools while increasing budgets for 42 boards and agencies...(Schools/education/students are pawns of politicians and unions)
The State Dems PRE-authorized about $300 million in Business Energy Tax Credits....while cutting those school budgets....
It’s been estimated about 37% of the revenues from these taxes will go to pay increases for teachers and State workers....
It DOES NOW!
They’re definitely smoking too much grass up there and have fallen for the rich is bad fiction....
Ever price a tractor tire?
A pair of big’uns pretty much = a new Chevy.
them dumb clod mashers!
Doesn't take much of a farm to be a MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR CORPORATION!!!
Portland Idiots!
(but they have really cool little trains, and flying suppositories to the Med School!)
(the rest of the State gets potholes and multi-million $$$ environmental impact statements)
We have a special session of the Legislature coming up in February....should be VERY interesting.....
The gross recepts tax has done very well for us here in NM. It has insured that there will never ever be any sort of serious economic base here.
Probably going to be even less when unemployment reaches 20%. And that's the direction it'll go when the people with the money to start and operate a business leave.
I don’t know...54-46 isn’t really a landslide, IMO.
I was thinkin the same thing. A friend of mine has been up there a couple of years and has wanted me to visit. I was planning on going in July when my youngest is away at camp. Think I won’t bother. What is wrong with those people. You never VOTE TO TAX YOURSELF!
I predict an upsurge in employment...in Idaho.
Much of Oregon’s unemployment comes from the ag and logging industries. Do you think the libs in Portland give a crap about loggers?
Another large clump of unemployed are the black men 17-24, the causes of which must be; institutional racism and George W. Bush.>s
I believe it’s pronounced O-re-GONE......
When the unions got the deal not to be taxed on “Cadillac” health insurance, some political pundits said that it was unconstitutional because of the “equal protection” clause. Which makes you wonder how Oregon’s law is constitutional, as well as any graduated tax. Singling people out for reward or punishment based upon their income is obviously not “equal protection.”
America no longer needs logs, farms or industry. All they do is pollute the Earth Mother.
No....Now that we have Maobama, he will make sure that “green and clean” energy will be the only “industry” that can be made, and “organic” foods and Vegan lifestyles will save the Planet from the evils of Capitalist Imperialism.
(For them, AVATAR is real.)
You really have to be a low-rent SOB to walk into a ballot box and cast a vote to steal money from the productive members of our society...the people that provide JOBS. Idiots. Hundreds of thousands of idiots.
Marking...
