Yep, that’s it! Still looks the same after ~30+ years .... Absolutely gorgeous part of the country and of Texas. San Antonio area used to be our escape from NAS Beeville - have many, many fond memories of those days.

I’m really looking forward to one day getting on the road and seeing more of Texas. Since moving here in late 2005, we’ve fallen in love with our adopted state, but haven’t had the resources to see much outside of the DFW area.

I enjoyed reading the comments on the thread. Sorta helps to put some flesh on the bones of towns I’ve heard of.

I’d go with Muenster any day of the week. Predominantly German, it has two home town German restaurants and is the home of a great cheese maker. The supermarkets sell good old time German sausages made right there in the town. The folks are friendly and crime is low. The motorcycle ride there on 82 across North Texas is pleasant all the way from New Boston way past Vernon. Couple that with the fact there are still some good German stock babes in Muenster makes that place A-1 in my book.

I was in Taylor, Hutto, and Marble Falls a lot last week, all nice towns. I’ve promised my Texas wife a move to Texas at some point in our lives, hopefully the job market complies soon.

I lived in Alpine as a kid.

It was alright, nice country and mule deer.

From what I recall, it was full of college-town politicking.

How ‘bout Possum Kingdom? I remember my father-in-law saying he’d spent time there once on a business trip.

Hutto is no more than northeast Austin, but at least it does not have the Marxist, tax-and-spend government we have inside the Austin city limits.

I think it’s a graveyard with the late Walter Matthau running it, with bonus BBQ :0

I hate to brag but #3 and # 5 were founded by my ancestors.

Just kidding, I don’t hate to brag.

my mis-spent youth involve Gruene, the Guadalupe River, an inner tube and Lone Star beer

How the heck is that mis-spent? That sounds like a vacation to me.

I have been to Willow City and driven the loop to see the bluebonnets. Awesome. And as wet as the fall and winter have been they should be spectacular this year.

To this day, memories of Gruene and the Guadalupe bring a smile to my face.

“BEST chicken-fried chicken livers”

That sounds good-do you by any chance know where you can get the best fried gizzards. All the ones I find these days have been chopped all up.

I know what you mean about Gruene...especially since they’re getting ready to build condos along the river. **Sigh** But, I still love it. It’s a nice little getaway for us and not too far from home.

Where do you stay in Fredericksburg? Every time I look into B&Bs there I get completely overwhelmed! There are so many to choose from.
