WASHINGTON – Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is missing President Barack Obama's State of the Union address in order to attend a conference in London, but she is not the only absentee Cabinet member.

One member of the Cabinet is designated by the White House to ride out the speech in an undisclosed location as a precaution against the possibility of a catastrophe wiping out the rest of the government leadership in the Capitol during the address.

The White House did not announce in advance of the speech who would be that holdout.

When Clinton became aware that her planned trip to London — for separate conferences on Yemen and Afghanistan — would coincide with the State of the Union address, aides approached the White House about it.

"Could she be the Cabinet member who remains outside the Capitol? We were told that the `undisclosed location' must be in the United States," said State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley. So, "she is not that Cabinet member."

Obama felt it was more important for her to go to London than to remain for his speech, Crowley said.

"She asked the president directly, `What do you want me to do?' And he was very clear: These (London talks) are priorities, so your place is in London working on Yemen and Afghanistan-Pakistan," Crowley said.

In an interview, Scheduled JAN.27, 8pm on PBS's Tavis Smiley Reports, Hillary Clinton tells Smiley she does not envision serving as Secretary of State for a second term. She also tells Smiley she is "absolutely not interested" in another presidential run.

I was aware of the AP report prior to your post.

1. Did you honestly think that she would announce that she was running in 2012 this early in Obama's presidential term?

2. Clinton is ambitious and will definitely run in 2012 especially if she perceives Obama as history. Democrats do not know any loyalty to anything or anyone.
