KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - IdleAire - a Knoxville-based company praised as offering a green technology option to long-haul truck drivers has closed its doors.
The Knoxville News Sentinel reported the shut-down of IdleAire on Thursday left 315 people without jobs - 60 of them in Knoxville.
IdleAire provided heat, air conditioning, electrical outlets, Internet link, telephone and cable television connections through a console that attached to truck window openings, allowing drivers to turn off their engines at truck stops.

I guess they’re not Idle but Gone.
But, I'm not a trucker. No idea if it was really feasible, or not.
They were featured on a Discovery Channel type show a short while back................
Rest In Peace, old friend, your work is finished.....
If you want ON or OFF the DIESEL KnOcK LIST just FReepmail me.....
This is a fairly HIGH VOLUME ping list on some days.....
I think it was on Modern Marvels on the History Channel.
It looked pretty weird.
why do truckers leave their trucks running at truck stops?
A/C or Heat; power for sleeper, etc.
I agree, and whomever put together the web marketing was a total dork.
It was a good idea, but IIRC the company had some serious problems with their product--company-killer kinds of problems.
It actually sounds like a good idea to me...
but, I do know a driver. If there is a mechanical problem, he gets no miles and no pay. He has been stuck before, when the truck wouldn’t start, waiting on a mechanic in the middle of nowhere...maybe truckers are afraid to shut down?
It might be a good idea but trucking companies have been hammered. I heard a news show on Christmas on the trucking radio channel about company that closed down on Christmas. Drivers were unaware until they arrived at their destination, then keys and trucks were confiscated. Gas cards were canceled. Payroll checks bounced. Figures, the company was out of Chicago. Sad sad story. There was a bright side. Stangers, families, young people, old people who met these truckers and heard their story were offering rides to their destination. Anyways, a company owner called in and stated there are many companies in trouble, but the banks tolerate it because they wouldn’t know what to do with the rigs. The market is already flooded from those that are out of business and storage is very expensive.
There is no recovery out there.
Most Truckers have refrigeration units to keep their cargo cool in summer and warm in winter. If they do not, they lose the load.
It would also be difficult for a high powered diesel to start up after a long cold shut down in winter. Truckers also have to keep their cab comfortable while they sleep during required down time.
Yeah, I thought it was a good idea, saving fuel while at the truck stop. But I guess the technology of WiFi and Cellular internet did them in. Most of the really big rigs have separate gasoline generators for the amenities........................
Refrigerated has to be kept running, plus if you like AC or heat, that needs to keep the truck running. If it’s really really cold outside, shutting down a diesel engine is not a good idea..................
Yeah, that heat, A/C and electricity from the hose connected to the station didn't come from using fuel, I guess.
With DIRECT TV, all you need is a heater.
I guess file it along with the Buggy Whip.
I’m suprised there isn’t a Bailout for them.
First, as pointed out by some, trucking companies have been hard hit by the economy, so services such as this are the first to be cut.
Second, many newer trucks have a chemical APU that produces power without the engine running. This will keep the cab comfortable and can operate the engine block heater to keep the coolant or oil warm and circulating on cold days.
Third, this company was badly managed.
Not the fuel in your tanks. But at least they could feel good about moving the co2 emissions to the power generating station........
Sounds like a good idea. Why did it fail?
