Do you believe they would start with planned famines, tanks rolling down Pennsylvania Ave., rich people dragged into the street and shot, mass executions?

Or, would they start with socialized medicine, a “National Security Force”, taking over major corporations (and handing them to unions), major tax hikes, major debt, public humiliation of the Supreme Court when they rule against you, cap ‘n trade, and on, and on...?

I've seen Mister Obama, and his little 5-year "health" plan described in many ways (Marxist, collectivist, socialist, and etc.)

However, I haven't actually encountered the term "Bolshevik" associated with Mister Obama's healthcare confiscation scheme.

His use of the "Bolshevik" term is likely calculated, as anyone, no matter how far to the left can say truthfully that he is not one. (It's Clintonian parsing, but I'm pretty sure that no hyper-leftie self-refers as a Bolshevik.)

Thus, one could be a Marxist, a Stalinist, a Maoist, a Chavez-wannabe, etc and still claim NOT to be a Bolshevik.

Since Mister Obama chose to bring it up, perhaps someone from the media might ask Mister Obama to identify the large figures of history who he admires most (and least); and also the political ideologies which which he most closely derives his own beliefs.

The Bolsheviks, originally also Bolshevists, derived from bol'shinstvo, "majority", which comes from bol'she, "more", the comparative form of bol'shoi, "big") were a faction of the Marxist Russian Social Democratic Labour Party which split apart from the Menshevik faction at the Second Party Congress in 1903. The Bolsheviks were the majority faction in a crucial vote, hence their name. They ultimately became the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. The true story behind the Russian revolution and its aftermath are jaw dropping inane. I’ve heard it described as if the whole thing was choreographed as a gigantic and evil Monty Python sketch.

For example, the “I Love You To Death”-style demise of Rasputin. Poisoned cake and wine with enough cyanide for five men, him possibly surviving because he had been taking poison himself for years to develop a resistance to it. Shot four times, stabbed, clubbed and castrated, yet still alive, they tied him up and pushed him under the ice of a river. He was still able to break out of his bounds, but drowned.

Up until the last part, his terrified assassins, trying to kill him over and over again and failing, kept going upstairs to listen to a recording of “Yankee Doodle” on a record player, to keep up their courage.

The rest of the revolution was just as wacky.

Nobody involved seemed to have any common sense or pattern recognition, making terrible mistakes again and again.

Another example was in the Duma, the parliament, where hundreds of mostly liberals and Mensheviks would assemble, with perhaps two dozen Bolsheviks. The Bolsheviks would scream and bang desks, throw paper, blow whistles, etc., to disrupt the proceedings. Annoyed by this, the liberals and Mensheviks would stomp out of the chamber to show their displeasure.

But the Duma did not need a quorum to vote new laws. So as soon as they left, the Bolsheviks would take the podium, and start passing dozens of new laws by unanimous vote. Not just once, but day after day. And still the liberals and Mensheviks would stomp out, leaving the Bolsheviks in charge of the government.

Kerensky, the democratically elected spineless president, was terrified of Bolsheviks. It the capital of St. Petersburg, he was dictating a memo to his secretary one afternoon, when there was a loud noise on the street below. Terrified, Kerensky jumped on his desk and screamed that “The Bolsheviks are here, we must flee!”, or words to that effect.

His unruffled secretary calmly went over to the window, then suggested that it was just a car backfiring. So Kerensky climbed down from his desk, sat down, and continued to dictate his memo.

Eventually, his paranoia got the better of him, so he sent word to the war front, to a senior, right wing general who had supported the Czar, to be prepared to march on St. Petersburg, to defend the government from the Bolsheviks.

The general decided that Kerensky was such a worm, that he, the general, should become the new leader of Russia. So he ordered his army to march on St. Petersburg, to take over. On hearing that the army was advancing on him, Kerensky panicked again, and ordered the city police arsenal to issue rifles to—the Bolsheviks, so they could “defend the city”.

The Bolsheviks later used those rifles to conquer the government.

But in the short term, they just stood on the side of the road, and yelled to the general’s draftee soldiers to defect. They did. A famous photograph of the time shows the general finally arriving in St. Petersburg, with perhaps thirty of his subordinate officers and maybe a company of soldiers.

They were all arrested by the St. Petersburg police.

When Lenin finally took over, the inmates truly ruled the asylum. He tried dozens of failed social experiments, like abolishing the bureaucracy, progressive schools, encouraging “free love”, etc. Each one dumber than the previous. Essentially trying out every idea in the communist bible.

Had it not resulted in such a tragically high human cost, ti would have been very funny.
