How to build a Shuttle-derived heavy-lift program
The Space Review ^ | 2/01/2010 | Edward Ellegood

Details are still sketchy and Congress must still weigh in, but it seems clear now that Ares 1 and Ares 5 are dead, the International Space Station will operate through 2020, and commercial rockets will be used to carry crew and cargo to the orbiting outpost. These outcomes are all within the Augustine Committee’s list of fixes for an exploration program that clearly was over budget, behind schedule, and demonstrably unsustainable.

Without a Shuttle-class rocket, billions of dollars in taxpayer-funded infrastructure will go unused, and thousands of uniquely skilled workers will be forced to pursue other careers.

Ask Detroit how that "Hopie Changie" thingie is working out for them up there. What makes the author think that isn't Zero's plan?

This battle isn’t over that’s for sure!

Five years of bipartisan support for return to moon doesn’t just evaporate with a wave of Obama’s magic wand.

Seems kind of stupid to do it like that. Just go digging around in the “black budget” goodies and make them take the wraps off the good stuff and would be no need to play with rockets on pillars of fire.

I don't see why the pols wouldn't want to undertake a mission to the moon. It'd be the perfect distraction for the masses while the congress destroys the economy and creeps in to take away their freedom.

The seduction of all that NASA money available for the Federal hog trough is the magic wand. Instead of searching for black holes in space, the Zer0 Regime is creating its own black hole on Earth. It is the Federal hog trough with it’s trillion dollar appetite.

Bon appetite!

In other words, a typical government program. What about Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and all other "entitlement" programs? Those are in the same shape. Will he kill those? Only if he can replace them with a more expensive and intrusive alternative. However, space and the military are frivolous games that are unnecessary.

Those Rooskies can follow American blue prints and design specifications pretty well. Sort of like sending off for a kit.

we all accept that government can build cars; they could build planes and spaceships, but they do it very inefficiently. We all think its great that man have landed on the moon, but don’t be distracted as this can also be done by a private company alot cheaply too

As I recall the old Soviet Union had a heavy lift capability. If I am not mistaken they could have put a 20 ton dump truck in orbit if they so desired.

I believe, a few years ago, I saw NASA represented as a dinosaur with wings. NASA is pretty bureaucratic bound at the present time.IMHO

NASA is a broken. bloated, inefficient, small minded, NIH, narrow minded, lost mission focus fiefdom that badly needs a reset
