I dig geology, but I’m not formally educated in it. Just interested. Would there be other changes such as release of gas (sulfur) or more “hot spots” on the ground that are new, before an eruption? or would the changes not appear in time to matter anyway?

It depends. When Krakatoa went in the late 19th century, there was no warning, the pressure was so great it literally blew out the side of the mountain without much of a sentinel eruption. I would suspect that if Yellowstone were to go, there are significant enough vents that there would me some (probably minimal) warning. Having said that, what is important is if the North American plate traps a significant amount of magma building pressure and then blowing out. The chances of a supervolcano in our life is obviously very small. Remember if Yellowstone goes, the whole ring of fire SHOULD erput to, so look for prodromal activity anywhere in Japan, Alaska, The Western US seaboard, and Hawaii...but that is just my opinion.

Remember, if Yellowstone goes, the whole ring of fire SHOULD erupt too

There's no direct connection between the hot spot of Yellowstone and the Ring of Fire around the Pacific O.
