A series of longitudinal studies, begun decades ago, are producing a rosier portrait of life after retirement. These studies don't portray old age as surrender or even serenity. They portray it as a period of development and they're not even talking about uber-oldsters jumping out of airplanes.
One of the keys to healthy aging is what George Vaillant of Harvard calls "generativity" providing for future generations. Seniors who perform service for the young have more positive lives and better marriages than those who don't. As Vaillant writes in his book Aging Well, "Biology flows downhill." We are naturally inclined to serve those who come after and thrive when performing that role

Soylent Green is people.
The not so dirty secret of the Kenyan’s health plan is that he wants the baby boomers to be aborted.
I’m sick of Brooks posing as a conservative spokesman. He should be expelled like Frum.
The Boomers are the tipping point where the governmental Ponzi schemes won’t work. Brooks is going to paint a happy face on the wreck.
To prevent duplication, please do not alter the article title. Thanks.

I think it would be patriotic and non selfish for all RINOS to vote conservative David.
Thanks Mod, I understand the duplication problem, but the title of the article doesn’t reflect the content of the article. If the title were true and accurate it would reflect Brooks unspoken pemise that seniors need to give up their benefits for the sake of the young. Besides, don’t I get to pick the title of my thread?
Utter crap!
I say that Brooks does “the right thing” and kill himself before he becomes a burden to American ... and that was last week.
At age 66, older Americans can work and earn as much as they wish and still collect their full benefit. Each year they work they are putting more money into the system.
So, it would make sense to encourage older Americans to work longer. But, in the end, it has to be voluntary.
One final thing is that those entering retirement now have already had their Social Security benefits slashed, thanks to the Greenspan commission. Plus they paid in higher Social Security taxes than needed, since their surplus went to support the general budget or reduce the budget deficit over what it would otherwise be.
I can’t imagine anyone calling himself a Conservative who does not agree with THIS Brooks article.
Do you love the government tit in your mouth so much you are blind to whose milk you’re drinking?
Hey Brooks, understand this: I’m not taking career advice from some RINO turd who thinks he’s so much better than us. Go pound sand and admire Obama’s pants some more.
“Seniors who perform service for the young ... “
To Serve The Young. Dagnabit, it’s a cookbook!
First they came for the unborn....granny is next on the list with O’s war on seniors. NO COLAs for 2-3 years, cuts to Medicare, increased premiums for Medicare, DOD imposes NEW BIG FEES on retired Military over 65 for their Tricare For Life, which is administered from the same agency as Medicare. NO COLA for retired Military or fed employees for 2-3 years same as SS seniors.
