Chael Sonnen took a page out of Team Quest teammate Matt Lindland’s book and threw his name in the hat for local politics.

“I have officially announced my candidacy for District 37 in Oregon for the House of Representatives,” Sonnen told MMAWeekly.com.

Running as a Republican, the preliminary election for the seat takes place in May and the general election in November.

“(The position is) currently held by a Republican, and he’s vacating the seat to run for the U.S. Fifth Congressional District,” said Sonnen. “I was recruited by the party to fill his seat, but there hasn’t been any polling yet. We’re three weeks in.”

Chael Sonnen is a middleweight(185lb) fighter for the UFC. He faught tonight and was a big underdog but really dominated Nate Marquardt. Now he's in line for a title shot. Very articulate guy and seems pretty conservative. Not what you'd expect out of a MMA guy.

Sonnen was a 5-1 underdog tonight and won. Good luck to him in the election.

One of my favorite MMA fighters. His background is in wrestling and I once saw an interview where they asked him about his fighting style and he replied something like this: I’m a republican, I don’t lay on the ground with my legs spread open with another man on top of me. A reference to the martial art Jiu-Jitsu which is one of the dominant disciplines in MMA. In my opinion the strategy is short-sighted as the best fighters excel at all disciplines but the quote was very funny and he is one of the most articulate athletes in the sport. Will be interesting to see where this goes.

What happened to no name run of the mill good Americans running for office? Nothing against this guy; but do you have to be a celebrity to run?
