Mexico's homicide rate has fallen steadily from a high in 1997 of 17 per 100,000 people to 14 per 100,000 in 2009, a year marked by an unprecedented spate of drug slayings concentrated in a few states and cities, Public Safety Secretary Genaro Garcia Luna said. The national rate hit a low of 10 per 100,000 people in 2007, according to government figures compiled by the independent Citizens' Institute for Crime Studies.

By comparison, Venezuela, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala have homicide rates of between 40 and 60 per 100,000 people, according to recent government statistics. Colombia was close behind with a rate of 33 in 2008. Brazil's was 24 in 2006, the last year when national figures were available.

Mexico City's rate was about 9 per 100,000 in 2008, while Washington, D.C. was more than 30 that year.

---Mexico City's homicide rate today is about on par with Los Angeles and is less than a third of that for Washington, D.C--

--but, but , I thought with all those "assault weapons" going south--oh, nevermind---

The left doesn’t like Mexico. They don’t like the pro-business, pro-Christian President and the burgeoning middle class. They love Chavez, however, but won’t report the crime spike there.

I don’t put much faith in anything AP says. I would have to know a lot more about where they got their figures before I would buy into any of those murder rates.

from the balance of the article . . .

“In just one week in December, the severed heads of six police investigators were dumped in a public plaza, kingpin ....

...In the new year, it’s become even more grotesque. Three weeks ago, a victim’s face was peeled from his skull and sewn onto a soccer ball. Days later, the remains of 41-year-old former police officer were divided into two separate ice chests.”

Things are really looking good !

Anyone who spends any amount of time near the TX Mex border knows that quoting stats like those found in this headline is useless.

I’m heading there for a three-week vacation soon and I’m looking forward to it.

if they don't report it, it never happened... just like statistics in major metro areas are rigged to reflect "less crime".

..I mean... we hear about 16 students getting killed at parties in Jauarez all the time 10 years ago, like the tanks and APC on the border, entire police forces killed or quitting, 3 chief of police murdered as each replacement takes his place... just a peachy little place.

I'm an American whose paternal grandparents came from Saltio and I haven't been back to Mexico since the 80's. It's a sh#t hole. I can get chiclets, tequila and loose women here without supporting a socialist/agrarian revolutionary government.

Nobody mentions the number one business activity now in Mayheeco... kidnapping and kidnapping "insurance"... neat little scam. Everybody's in on it.. the police, the criminals and the press that hasn't been murdered yet. Plumo o Plata... it's not just a saying in Mexico... It's a way of life.

I will agree there might be fewer murders than 10 yrs ago but they are killing policemen and mayors and dentists.

They don't mention that the US homicide rate, in spite of having 20 million illegal Mexican immigrants, is 5.9 per 100,000, less than half of Mexico's. Take out the homicides committed by inner city thugs and illegal immigrants, correct for age of population profiles, and we are right in the neighborhood of European murder rates.

So, will more or fewer homicides in Mexico reduce the number of illegal aliens flooding into the US?
