Chinese Leaders Threaten To Sell US Debt As Punishment For Taiwanese Arms Sale

Feb. 9, 2010, 3:12 PM

The doomsday scenario we've feared since World War II has arrived.

In response to the United States' latest arms sale to Taiwan, the Chinese military has suggested that China sell off some of the U.S. debt it owns to give the U.S. an economic punch of sorts.

Reuters: Senior Chinese military officers have proposed that their country boost defense spending, adjust PLA deployments, and possibly sell some U.S. bonds to punish Washington for its latest round of arms sales to Taiwan.

The calls for broad retaliation over the planned U.S. weapons sales to the disputed island came from officers at China's National Defence University and Academy of Military Sciences, interviewed by Outlook Weekly, a Chinese-language magazine published by the official Xinhua news agency.

The interviews with Major Generals Zhu Chenghu and Luo Yuan and Senior Colonel Ke Chunqiao appeared in the issue published on Monday.

Don't know, but you can bet it takes far more than 3 syllables.

And just where will the Chinese put their money so it’s safe and earning interest?

Greece, perhaps.

China and India are on the march regardless of their political slant. They both believe in consumer driven economies. POTUS Obama believes in collectivism and statism, better known as socialism/communism/facism combined. He is trying his utmost to destroy the once powerful USA economy. Come Thursday, God forbid, and Iran annouces that it now has a nuclear weapon that is operational, all hell will break loose. Face it , folks we are without any leadership of the ship of state. Morons and buffoons out the insane farm are running the country with America hater Barack Hussein obama as the leader of the pact. Americans, you did a fantastic job voting in the incompetent, empty suit. You should be very, very afraid, for yourselves and your weakness in choice, for your children and grandchildren and....for the millions of us who had good common sense to vote against this total loser and destroyer of America. The man does not have a clue and....has put us all in mortal danger. you should be calling on his Democrat Party to force him to resign or impeach him as soon as possible!!!

This may sound ridiculous, but if we really care about keeping Taiwan free, why don't we sell them nuclear weapons -- & let the Chinese know that they are now a member of the Nuclear Club after those weapons have arrived & been set up in their defense?

Wouldn't doing so cause the Chinese to re-think their desire to take over Taiwan?

#1, if China dumps the debt they lose their investments.

#2, why would they care if Taiwan has defensive weapons if China is not going to attack?

It would probably be a net good thing for them to do that - and they know that and that’s why they won’t do it.

The sooner we have a reality check on our spending the better at this point . . . it may be painful but the pain will only be worse later on as we pile on more debt.

Hmmmm, let’s see…Who will they sell the Treasuries to? They certainly won’t sell to anyone holding dollars, because Treasuries are paid in dollars, dollar-holders already have plenty of dollars…..How about England? Not a chance. Canada? Nope. Australia? Noooo. OK, France! Yes, France loves us SO much they would gladly buy our..Wait! Nope! France has surrendered and decided that holding more dollars in their central bank on top of the Greece disaster could be a bit risky…How about the Swiss??? You’re kidding of course. Germany? Germany doesn’t even want to help Greece, a fellow EU member – think they want our Treasuries? Treasuries have been selling at sucko interest rates, so the Chinese will have to take a hit in their dollar holdings to dump the bonds. At the scale they are talking, they might find very few credible buyers. The mistake they made, as did the Arabs in the post-WWII world, was to agree to be paid in little pieces of green paper. Come to think of it, so have we.
