Developments in Iran's Nuclear Program – The Double Deception
MEMRI ^ | 090 FEB 2010 | A. Savyon

Posted on 02/10/2010 6:11:56 AM PST by BCW

The past 10 days have seen several developments connected to Iran's nuclear program. In a January 31, 2010 television interview, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced out of the blue that Iran had agreed to the uranium exchange deal that it had rejected repeatedly since October 2009. This announcement came several days after it was reported that the U.S. was deploying missile defense systems in the Gulf. However, on February 7, 2010, Ahmadinejad announced that Iran would begin to enrich uranium by itself, to a level of 20%, and that it had attained laser technology for uranium enrichment. The Iranian daily Kayhan, which is close to Iranian Leader Ali Khamenei, even declared that, once Iran enriches uranium to 20%, the West will not be able to stop it at that level of enrichment, and would have to negotiate with it over higher levels of enrichment.

Scott Brown’s Win Called Victory for Netanyahu

The election triumph of Republican Scott Brown in the race to fill Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat in Massachusetts is a “huge victory” for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to Israel’s Haaretz newspaper.

Netanyahu has been pressured by Obama to make concessions to the Palestinians to help restart peace talks. But with Republicans now holding 41 seats in the Senate, Obama will be more dependent “on the support of his Republican rivals, the supporters and friends of Netanyahu,” Haaretz reported.

Netanyahu dragged out negotiations over a freeze on Jewish settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, then declared that a freeze would last for 10 months and end in September — “just in time for U.S. congressional elections in which Democrats are expected to suffer heavy losses,” the newspaper observed.

“Netanyahu understood he must withstand the pressure until his right-wing supporters recapture a position of power on Capitol Hill and work to rein in the White House’s political activities. The election in Massachusetts . . . will from this moment on be a burden for Obama.”

With the current political atmosphere in the U.S., “Netanyahu can rely on Republican support to thwart pressure on Israel.”

The link at the article pretty much summarizes the position of Iran, and its intention htat it is determined (and presumably fit) to join the world's nuclear weapons powers.
Anybody believe that?

I am truly curious.
Has there ever been a decent Freeper thread discussing the "value" of gold?

I mean the obsession to collect it as protection against something.

I can't understand it though. What ultimate value does it have? Other than jewelry and satellite circuits?

Can you eat it?
Can you run your power plants with it?
Has it ever cured a disease of solved a medical problem?

What's with the personal and national obsession with gold?

Other than the "mine is bigger than yours" factor?

From the article you posted:
“Early in his administration Obama had said he would give the Iranians until the end of 2009 to change their policy on nuclear weapons development. But a year later the Iranians continue with plans to develop a nuclear warhead.”

I heard on the radio this morning Obama “sternly” warning Iran that a) Iran had made its intentions clear; b) however, the “door was still open” for negotiations; c) but Obama’s planners now were working on “tough” sanctions that apparently will take weeks to negotiate/put into place.

What a ludicrous mixed message. When you lay down a line in the sand to a playground bully, your negotiating power isn’t enhanced by hemming and hawing once he crosses it. You don’t gain respect by saying “Look, we still can resolve the peacefully, but if not, I’m going to get REALLY TOUGH with you.” The bully will correctly deduce you are a weenie with no intention of standing up for yourself (or anyone else).

This posture INVITES aggression, as you’ve essentially signaled to the bully that chances are way better than even that if he escalates the confrontation, you will timidly back down. One would think that a “tough” community organizer from Chicago would understand these basic principles, but apparently not. No wonder Obama’s public esteem declines with every passing day.

“I cannot believe Israel will sit by and let this happen.”

I concur entirely, but it’s sad that I place far greater faith in a tiny country such as Israel to “do the right thing” than I do in the most powerful nation on earth. We are a paper tiger so long as Obama is at the helm...

“Has there ever been a decent Freeper thread discussing the “value” of gold?”

You are kidding, right? There are debates over gold on FR all the time. Why does anything have a perceived value? Since the dawn of recorded history, the ancients valued gold because it was the only metal they knew that did not tarnish or rust, was pleasing to the eye and soft enough to fashion into jewelry; they also noticed that it was relatively hard to find. They later decided it was more practical for economic trade than direct barter. People today still value gold for the same reasons. 5,000 years of perceptions are not going away soon. I think gold will continue to prove useful because everyone wants it. True that you can’t eat it, but it will buy a lot of influence. Years ago the National Geographic ran a large artical about gold and described some of the industrial uses for it. If you still can’t see the point, fine, just hang on to your greenbacks and watch their value evaporate. Gold is more enduring than government promises.
