Police: Man with weapons cache was preparing for 'Armageddon'

By Stefanie Geisler, Globe Correspondent

A Manchester-by-the-Sea man arrested for stockpiling weapons and ammunition in his home allegedly told police he was preparing for Armageddon.

Gregory D. Girard, 45, was arrested Tuesday night for allegedly storing approximately 20 weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition.

Just before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Manchester-by-the Sea police executed a search warrant at 23 Bridge St., police said. Girard faces four counts of possession of an infernal device and four counts of possession of a dangerous weapon. Additional charges are pending, police said.

“Mr. Girard indicated he was preparing for ‘Armageddon,’ which he felt was imminent, and he felt martial law would soon be imposed,” Chief Glenn McKiel said in a statement.

In addition to the weapons and ammunition, police found a large collection of camouflage clothing, knives, bulletproof vests, helmets, and several pairs of handcuffs. They also discovered stockpiles of medicine and nonperishable foods. An illegal indoor shooting range was also found in the attic, police said.

Police seized all the weapons and ammunition and revoked Girard’s license to carry firearms.

Police negotiators attempted to reach Girard by phone before executing the search warrant but were unsuccessful. Tactical officers evacuated two other condominium units in the building and brought residents to the police department while the search was completed.

Girard has no criminal record, according to police. He was to be arraigned today in Salem District Court.

What’s illegal about stockpiling firearms and ammunition?

“What’s illegal about stockpiling firearms and ammunition?”

Don’t know...if you go through the whole thread (if you have the time) you will see a LOT of different opinions and a ton of information about the guy involved. This one has a lot of potential to be a good court case, IMNSHO...

Illegally modified, like when the ATF confiscated that guy’s dirty AR-15 because it bump-fired, and they then filed down a part to make it bump fire every time?

Or a simple vice and blow torch?

It would be interesting to see the details as to what, exactly, the definition as applied to.

Could Patriot Act be used by DHS and/or NSA to monitor internet discussions?

Who needs the Patriot Act to monitor you?

He's being charged with possessing "infernal devices" in....Salem, Mass. Hmmm. I thought they'd got all that out of their system.

Ha - you think .380 ammo is hard to find. I’ve been scouring the gun shows for decent reloads for my Infernal Device. Do you realize how much the factory stuff costs?

“What’s illegal about stockpiling firearms and ammunition?”

I was wondering that, too.

I’m just glad that Maine broke away from Massachusetts in 1820. The Second Amendment is alive and well in Maine.....we’re a gun happy state and that suits me just fine.

At some point we’re going to stop trusting in the so-called law and start trusting in our base instincts like survival and defense against tyrants. Then let’s see these cowards serve a search warrant.

The 2nd amendment is not at issue here as its a State law and State law enforcement, the Massachusetts State Constitution IS at issue here as it holds:
“Article XVII. The people have a right to keep and to bear arms for the common defence.”

http://www.mass.gov/legis/const.htm
The government of Massachusetts has repeatedly violates the rights of Bay Staters in ignoring the limits of its own constitutional authority.

One begins to question if Massachusetts still maintains a “republican form of government”, as it is apparently no longer a government of Constitutional law( http://www.mass.gov/legis/const.htm ), but men who now pass and enforce what ever “law” they want to the exculpation of the lawful limits of the Constitution of Massachusetts.

“Article XVII. The people have a right to keep and to bear arms for the common defence CONSTITUTION OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS.

How can their *be* illegal weapons or a requirement to register them in the commonwealth? Oh, I forgot progressives only apply Constitutions when it suits them.”

I have no problem with requiring people to have to register guns. It allows law abiding citizens like myself to have as many guns as I like, and allows the authorities to prevent people with violent criminal records, violent mental histories, and the thugs up the street from having them legally. I don’t want guns in some people’s hands, and when I buy one, I welcome the background check.
