I don’t see how these eco-wackos can be considered anything but pirates according to traditional law of the sea. Our Navy Seals dealt with that appropriately off the coast of Somalia.

Take a look at the related vid clips at YouTube. One posted by the Japanese shows the Ada crew lasing the bridge of the whaler to blind the pilot. There will be martyrs

The Japanese use a loophole to do research and then eat the whales, so no waste.

Dream on. Few people are less popular here than Paul Watson.
Even most eco-nuts distance themselves from the Sea Shepherds as seen with both the local chapters of Greenpeace and WWF distancing themselves from him.
Watson is/was a wanted man in this country due to his acts of terrorism. But of course he and his tax-exempt organization are protected by the US government and have been since the Bush-years.

On the other side of this war we have the age old traditional Japanese whaling industry that just wants to do what it is legally doing. Riiiight... Age old tradition of exploding harpoons and industrial processing ships who pretend to be doing "research" then sell the meat back in Japan. Ahh yes, the good old days of the Shogun.

That bow-on view is a thing of beauty! You can clearly see the batboat's bow leap up as it accelerates into the path of the larger vessel. That same increased forward thrust was visible in the hose-spray-shrouded side view, but the head-on really shows that the idiot terrorists committed "batboat suicide".
Loved the shot of that piece of junk sinking!
Only thing prettier would be seeing that thing being raked stem to stern by a Phalanx burst...

Actually, I believe the spray was purposed to illuminate the laser beam being trained on the whaler's bridge. Watch the connected vid from Japanese source.
And I have to admire the restraint of the whaler's captain: there was no reason not to believe the laser was NOT an aiming device. The whaler could have sunk the Ada, and justified it, and any loss of life...but chose to disable the boat, instead, with a glancing blow.

On a trip to Japan last year I finally made it to the enormous Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo and there were a few locations where whale meat was displayed and sold at wholesale. It looked like a cross between large wild game (moose, for example) i.e. very dark red with white layers of fat or blubber. Later on we were at a tempura restaurant and one of the things they brought out turned out to be deep fried whale.
Tradition may be one reason why the Japanese still hunt whales, but nutritional value and amazingly delicious rich taste are another two. Like you, I would not personally ever want to harm a whale, dolphin, seal, or any other aquatic mammal. I wouldn't kill and eat a dog either, all are too intelligent for ME to knowingly put them on MY menu.
But, if an activity is legal, does not push a species to extinction (6 ships aren't going to decimate any whale species), creates something actually useful (high caloric value food) and those who oppose it do everything and more under the accepted definitions of sabotage, terrorism, and piracy, the former have IMHO every right in international waters to sink the bastards and hang any they catch from a handy yard arm.

More to the point: a laser can blind or damage eyesight permanently. It is a weapon in its own right.
Most everything the eco-terrorists do is potentially life-threatening. The Japanese would be entirely justified in killing them. A pity we live in such ‘civilized’ times that no one is willing to do the right thing to criminals.

Sure. It’s easy to get things wrong online. :)
And Watson is one subject that easily gets me carried away. No one likes to have their eating habits interfered with.

Japanese merchant ships engaged in lawful activity, being attacked by political terrorists in a predictable manner. Where is the Japanese fleet? Its been so long since weve seen a warship really do its stuff.
Entertain me guys,,,
This is all taking place in waters claimed by Australia. And despite being crazy the Sea Hippies are very popular in Australia, where their ships are based. The Australians have ordered the Japanese to stop whaling there, but since the Japanese don't recognize the Australian territorial claim they just ignore them. The Australians on the other hand don't want to endanger their trade with Japan so they just ignore the whaling.
Now most governments can ignore six unarmed merchant ships belonging to a friendly country violating their territorial waters. But if Japan sends down a task force (and you would need oilers to support the short legged warships, and then more warships to protect the oilers) the Australians would be forced to do something. They in turn would have to send warships down. So now you have two armed fleets in close proximity of each other. It would be a powder keg with the Sea Hippies holding the matches.
I get the feeling that both the Australians and the Japanese have agreed that this is a no warship zone.

It would be interesting if the Japanese went after the wealthy donors, either with lawyers or with ninjas. What is the difference between engaging in terrorism because you don't agree with someone's heritage, ethnicity, nationality, etc. and terrorism because you disagree with people exercising their legal rights?
Answer is NONE!
Yet the Sea Shepherd terrorist group gets away without even a slap on the wrist. These eco-terrorists should be treated like the TERRORISTS they are. Even their own footage (thanks to "Whale Wars"), millions have seen their actions.
The Steve Irwin rammed (can't deny it - from watching both the Japanese footage (they document EVERY encounter - good idea), and the Sea Shepherd's footage - there is no denying it. They regularly attack with everything from ship-crippling prop fowlers, to butyric acid (if you have ever come in contact with it- you never forget it), and other stuff to disable, harm, or otherwise inflict damage. Their "home" registration country (Netherlands?) have warned them repeatedly about throwing or launching anything from the Steve Irwin - or they would revoke their license to fly under their flag. But that nation doesn't have a backbone - and still hasn't enforced this threat.
Regardless of one's beliefs regarding whales (I'm not real comfortable with the whale hunting), the Japanese fleet is operating within INTERNATIONAL law. In that regard, the Sea Shepherd organization is clearly violating international laws against terrorism. Thus anyone supporting this organization (particularly financially) is a supporter of terrorism and should be prosecuted as such. There are some very high-profile supporters - including George Soros (imagine that).
