Sen. John McCain once led the global warming debate on Capitol Hill, pledging to force repeated floor votes on cap-and-trade legislation until it passed.
"Over time we will not be elected Miss Congeniality in the Senate, but we will win," the Arizona Republican said in April 2006.
But McCain has gone on hiatus from the issue since losing the presidential election to Barack Obama. And he is likely to keep his distance even more over the next six months due to a primary challenge from a conservative former congressman that threatens to end his Senate career after four terms.
"The political climate has changed, and that's why you see this campaign-year conversion in John McCain," said J.D. Hayworth, who represented the Phoenix suburbs for 12 years, in an interview yesterday.

McCain is going down in flames.
Juan MCCain’s little pocket pal Graham-nesty is pushing cap & tax. They ae cross dressers. When McCain is up for election - he acts like a conservative or dresses in drag to hide he is a RINO.
Ditto graham-nesty. Lindsay is not up for election, so he/she is dressed as normal as a stinking RINO.
Senor Juan Pedro McCain has to go.
Too late!
Hehheheheheheh
He’s not going to go down easily. You should hear the horrible negative ads he’s running against J.D. If McCain’s record is so laudable, shouldn’t he be promoting that more than spending so much money and focus on an opponent?
Democrats are taking notice of the country’s mood, especially after Brown won “Ted’s” seat.
A McCain loss would make many Republican examine their less than conservative, big gov’t policies. Maybe even prompt a return to sanity.
Grahamnesty would die of loneliness.
Coming soon:
“McCain Condemns Amnesty, Demands Border Enforcement”.
Flush McKennedy back to the big sewer in the sky.
Please.
You say the nicest things.
Amazing, the NYT refuses to say anything about climategate.
I’m certain Hayworth can make McCain pay dearly on this issue, make him answer difficult questions about the corruption of science due to the climate hucksters, make him state where he stands.
If he changes from his pro-AGW beliefs, make sure the voters know about his filp-flop.
If he doesn’t change his stance on AGW, make him pay dearly, I think this is a winning issue for those that acknowledge the reality of post-climategate politics.
A McCain loss would make many Republican examine their less than conservative, big govt policies. Maybe even prompt a return to sanity.
From your lips to gods ears... We can only hope...
Senator McCain...Please retire to Rinoland!
Even if Hayworth does not win, he is doing a service by forcing McCain to the right during these dangerous few months when Dems have such a large majority in Congress.
Cap and trade is probably the best example.
After the probable GOP gains in November, cap and trade and amnesty will be dead as a doornail. So McCain (if he’s still around) can then go back to his beloved “reaching-across-the-aisle” with less disastrous consequences for the country.
Playing “CYA” won’t help him this time around.
Let’s hope the folks in Arizona can put him to pasture this November.
The other good thing about JD’s run is that will keep McCain’s money in AZ rather funding like minded RINOs like Crist.
I’ve heard them and yes, they are horrible. From what I hear, JD is officially announcing on Feb. 15. Monday can’t come soon enough!
Time to retire Hanoi John and his treasonous anti-American agenda.
Juan McAmnesty is no conservative...never was...never will be
I would like Meghan to talk more so that she can call ordinary citizens racist, homophobic, radicals, etc.....
Hopefully kill any chances of her disgusting father being re-elected
