Happy-Face Totalitarian Commercials
The Atlas Society - The Center for Objectivism ^ | February 10, 2010 | Edward Hudgins

Three recent TV ads get our attention with totalitarianism. They do so to different degrees and in different ways. And they certainly are barometers of the shift in the popular culture in this once-free country.

Green Police

The first was the “Green Police” advertisement for Audi that was broadcast during this year’s Super Bowl. It starts with a clerk asking a customer that standard question, “Paper or plastic?” When the customer answers the latter, Green Police swoop in and cuff him with the words, “You picked the wrong day to mess with the eco-system.” A man is asked by the eco-cops whether he installed the lights on his house; next we see them hauling him away as a news reporter announces that “a man has just been arrested for possession of an incandescent lightbulb.” Another jackbooter empties illegal plastic water bottles and a bather is dragged out of his hot tub for having the temperature too high.

As Green Police on Segways man a roadblock, they allow the guy in the Audi to drive on through because he has a “clean diesel” car.

The ad does get our attention, as is its goal. But does it suggest that an Al Gore Gestapo is a good thing? And what the hell were the Audi folks thinking?

Perhaps the ad’s authors were hoping with this subject matter to catch the PR lightning of the now-legendary Apple computer commercial that aired during the 1984 Super Bowl. In that ad we see an auditorium with Big Brother on a giant screen haranguing a cowering crowd of identically uniformed prisoners. A beautiful female runner jogs into the hall and hurls a huge hammer at the screen, destroying it and freeing the inmates from the tyranny of IBM as imagined by Steve Jobs.

I remember when the Greenie Weenies used to look DOWN on me for choosing paper over plastic.

In the early ‘80s, a previous generation of enviro-liberal-radicals pressure brought us plastic bags in grocery stores. It was to save the trees and all that. Now, the enviro-liberals have decided that plastic bags are not enviro friendly. But it was due to the pressures of enviro-radicals that we have plastic bags in the first place!!!!!!!

Because they wanted to do something with the shoddy plastic recovered from recycling milk jugs.

My favorite part about the OP is that ‘Chavez’ is a tagline!

LOL

I most definitely agree that this is a dangerous movement, like Van Jones said “the green economy will start off as a small subset and uh, we’re going to push it and push it and push it um, until it becomes the engine the engine for transforming the whole society.”

It was a trick question. If he had answered "paper" he would have been arrested too. "Paper or plastic?" is the eco equivalent of "Have you stopped beating your wife?"

That’s because it’s not whether you choose paper or plastic and more about just controlling your life.

They’d rather you just didn’t buy food and starved to death.

I despise plastic bags. Not only do they look trashy but they cannot hold the contents which means time spent putting everything back in the bags when you get home.

“Paper or plastic?”
Don’t use those re-usable cloth bags.
Consider: Today you buy meat (which we all know has fluids on the outside of the package). Next week you buy fruit and vegetables and put them in the same bag. Do your kids wash their apples? Mine don’t. The fruit and veggies now have week old meat fluids on them.

I’m going down to my local “hippie market.”

When they ask “paper or plastic?,” I’ll say “One of each, please.”

Not to mention that the checkers tend to put like items
in the bags so you will end up with a loaf of bread in a
bag, a bottle dish liquid in a bag, three apples in a bag,
etc.

Paper for me and double bag it if you please.

You are supposed to bring canvas (or macrame) sacks from home.

Perhaps those who are obsessed with plastic bags and with carbon dioxide should put the plastic bags over their heads so that none of their CO2 can escape from their mouths to harm Gaia and no oxygen can get into their months and lungs to create that evil CO2 to begin with!

There is also a Smart Balance commercial showing people in the nanny state of Denmark smiling cultishly because their government locks up folks who use trans fat, and they are all healthy now.

Apparently, the Smart Balance ad is referenced in the article.

(Normally I get annoyed with unnecessary excerpting but your excerpt was informative on its own, and the Atlas Society website to its credit has no annoying flash or popup ads).
