For those of you in TX, and it may take a while for my post to make it to the thread, what do you think about her position on eliminating property tax and replacing it with a “revenue neutral” sales tax. To me that’s pandering to the rich with lots of assets, ranchers with lots of acreage, etc. Just asking.

“what do you think about her position on eliminating property tax and replacing it with a “revenue neutral” sales tax.”

I thought it was crazy at first. I went to her website and downloaded the 40 page .pdf that explains it in a good deal of detail. It actually has some merit. The main change of the sales tax idea is that it covers almost everything. Even real property sales, so - you end up paying your property tax (sort of) either 1 time during the sale - or spread out over your mortgage payment.

When you do the math, its pretty easy to see a “revenue” neutral outcome, and it takes out the arbitrary “assessment” factor. For what its worth, ranches are generally “ag exempt” and this broad based tax would not exempt them as the current format does.

Also, for what its worth - “She” obviously didn’t come up with the plan. It was done by some think tank and pretty thorough. I’ll bet the guys that did the plan lit themselves on fire this morning after hearing her on Beck.
