HELSINKI (Reuters) – Sweden took the number one spot from the United States to top the annual rankings on the usage of telecommunications technologies such as networks, cellphones and computers, a report released on Thursday shows.
The Connectivity Scorecard, created by London Business School professor Leonard Waverman in 2008, measured 50 countries on dozens of indicators, including technological skills and usage of communications technology.
"Sweden not only has the best current mix of attributes, but it also shows few signs of losing its lead," said Waverman.
"By contrast, there is the beginning of a gap in what was once the essence of U.S. leadership in most industrial and service sectors - education and skills."

Well, the USA is still at the forefront of innovation in the tech industry and the Global Economy will have so many opportunities, we will have a considerable market share. Look at the computer market in China, Dell had an 18% revenue share in 2009 and HP had over 10% unit share.
As far as the Swiss go, their population is only 7.7 million so obviously this ranking is based on per capita usage.
It shouldn’t be a surprise, Switzerland has always been one of the most affluent countries in the World. They are sheltered from many of the World’s problems while their population certainly isn’t very diverse.
Sweden has about the population of North Carolina. These comparisons really don’t say much.
Doesn’t surprise me... We tend to invent things and others tend to bring them to market (see Japanese history). Unfortunately, our government regulations and taxes make it near impossible to become leaders within our own industry. Maybe next year..heh.
Sweden doesn’t have a Detroit neither.........
I hear Sweden is working on having their own Dearborn however.
But they do have a Malmo.
I’ll be a contrarian and suggest that an over-reliance on technology is hardly desirable.
A population glued to their Blackberries, Twitter, Facebook, WiFi, and automotive GPS. Hmmm.
I actually see a population being dumbed down by dependency on technology. Power goes out or a satellite is lost to a solar storm or a battery drains and what are you left with? - a bunch of helpless functional illiterates, that’s what.
But Obama is shifting funding priorities to create a politically controlled “social economy” with politically driven (fake) science - the kind of thing that caused mass starvation in the Soviet Union, China, and elsewhere. The shift in research dollars to fund even more Global Warming and Green EcoNazi nonsense will be at the expense of real science. And as far as private technical innovation - they’re going to regulate that out of existence and replace it with (in effect) government controlled licenses in the system of “crony-capitalism.”
All this not only against Asian progress, but against the EU, which has been putting big bucks into funding for research near and at the edge of commercialization.
Cuz of our MSM here few Americans realise bout Malmo...or the burning of autos in France etc etc etc
