Those mascots (apparently not same as the logo) look Japanese. Just using black dots for eyes instead of giant white “doe eyes”.

The winter Olympics allow me to recycle a joke every four years. When the Japanese ski jumpers are taking their turns, I like to comment: “Boy, it looks pretty cold there. Yes, it looks like there’s a little nip in the air.”

Amazing photo. From the video, looks like he was turned the opposite direction when hitting the pole. His back/spine were likely snapped in half in an instant.

Thanks for posting. No matter how hard the politicians try to hog the limelight and/or screw things up, the amazing accomplishments of the athletes and the good will of the locals always shines through.

I'll be watching tonight!

Let the Games begin!

I read that there have been a dozen crashes in training. The track is super-super fast.. guys are managing 90+ mph.

Here’s an article talking about it, dated January 2009:

Here is Nodar Kumaritashvili right before the crash:

Screw the communists.

Geesh, if we have to wait to spend money on anything else until we “feed, clothe and house everyone”, then NOTHING else would get done.

If there is any comfort at all in this tragedy, he likely felt no pain. Death was instantaneous from what I’ve heard.

I’ve watched luge for years, and when I saw the video, I couldn’t believe how fast he was going, even before the crash I thought how easy it would be to lose control at that speed if he makes the tiniest of mistakes. It’s just way too fast, and don’t get me started on those beams right next to the track.

The IOC might wind up paying big time for this.
