The National Marine Fisheries Service said Friday it's investigating the dead animals that drifted to shore and include at least one Steller sea lion, a species listed as endangered under the federal Endangered Species Act.

The rest are California sea lions.

Brian Gorman of the fisheries service said it's illegal in most—but not all—cases to shoot any kind of sea lion.

He says five shooting deaths in one year is highly unusual.

The West Seattle Blog first reported the deaths.

SEATTLE (AP)—Authorities say five or six sea lions have been shot to death near Seattle.

The National Marine Fisheries Service said Friday it's investigating the dead animals that drifted to shore and include at least one Steller sea lion, a species listed as endangered under the federal Endangered Species Act.

In the meantime, God is taking care of the pythons and iguanas in Florida.

It's more environmentally friendly to beat them to death.

The harmful effects of spent brass on the ecosystem is well known.

These things are basically oversized rats which are destroying fisheries.

Only enforced if a man kills one though. If an Orca or shark eats one, it’s OK

Sea lions have been known to swallow spent bullets and die horrible painful deaths from lead poisoning, just like millions of waterfowl and golden eagles. /sarc

Exactly. Their damage to the ecosystem far outweighs whatever benefit they may have. The people who defend them would likely just as soon ban rat traps. They’re usually the who don’t have to put up with the damage the animals inflict. In the NE the seals are decimating the shellfish and inshore fisheries.

Maybe they offended the Mexican drug cartels or were caught spying on some meth makers.

My wild guess is some pissed off Indians plugged them. Indians there have a big salmon fishing business and sea lions love to eat them

My wild guess

When they find the heroic shooter, send him up to Bonneville Dam to continue his environmental activism. The springers will be running soon, and the fish eating fur balls need to be kept at bay.

A baby seal walks in to a bar.
Bartender asks ‘what will you have”?
Seal says “anything but a Canadian Club”

Actually, it’s rather humane to club them before stabbing them through the heart -as shown.

Well, I just think that if we allowed a reasonable harvest, we could keep things in balance.

Also, look at what the sea lions did to the clam population on the Central Coast of California.
