HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Police said a female member of the UA-Huntsville staff shot and killed three co-workers on campus.

Huntsville Police, Madison County Sheriff's department and HEMSI responded to a shooting at the UAH campus at 4:00 Friday afternoon.

The shooting happened in the Shelby Center, a math and science classroom building.

Authorities said a female faculty member during a Biology faculty meeting learned she would not receive tenure. She then pulled out a gun and started shooting.

Fox News said she got her Phd at Harvard. Their must have been some trouble brewing for quite a while, else why would she have brought the gun? I am assuming the campus was supposed to be a gun-free zone.

Too bad no one had a gun for self defense. Wonder if it was registered. Wonder if she even had a permit.

Just for the record here, it's a letter from the University of Alabama in Huntsville and signed by the President David B. Williams. It has a date of December 1, 2008. And it's been redacted to remove the person's name that it is written to. Here is the content of the letter.

Thank you for letter expressing your point of view regarding the issue of allowing concealed handguns on campus. While the law would permit a member of the university community who has the proper permit to carry a firearm on campus, the rules and regulations of UAHuntsville forbid the possession or the bringing of such a weapon onto our campus.

The Code of Conduct in the UAHuntsville Student handbook specifically prohibits firearms and other weapons from being kept or brought onto the campus (page 97, paragraph 21). Furthermore, the Student Handbook states that "the university has the right and responsibility to formulate and disseminate policies and guidelines to promote the general welfare of its members and students have the responsibility to know such policies and guidelines." As president, I have the responsibility of insuring that our students, faculty, and staff have an educational environment that is conducive to learning and free from unreasonable distraction. UAHuntsville is first and foremost an academic institution that promotes the pursuit of knowledge and that instruction and development of our students. Allowing firearms and other weapons on our campus is not compatible with our mission.

Sincerely,
David B. Williams
President

"I predict she gets tenure on her next try."

...whether or not she wants it. She certainly earned tenure at her next institution.

"Another gun-free zone experiences peace and happiness." You were correct. This was a gun free zone as is nearly every campus in the country. Gun Free Zones should be relabled, "Open season on defenseless people zones." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Her actions indicate that she thinks she could shoot ahead of everyone else.

Fox News said she got her Phd at Harvard. There must have been some serious ill-will, since she came prepared. I assume it was a gun-free campus, so no one else was able to defend themselves.

Wonder if the gun was registered, and whether she had a concealed carry permit?

Prayers for the victims and their families. I hope the media doesn’t turn this into another “blame the victim” scenario.

A Virginia Citizens Defense League alert had the following link to the university's gun policy:

http://www.iss.uab.edu/Pol/FirearmsFtab.pdf

No firearms, ammunition, or dangerous weapons are allowed in buildings or other facilities of the University of Alabama at Birmingham at any time. A gun permit does not authorize a staff member, faculty member, student, patient, or visitor to bring firearms into UAB buildings or into other UAB facilities under any circumstances. UAB prohibits the possession, transportation and use of firearms, ammunition and other dangerous weapons on University property. This policy applies to all employees (faculty and staff), contractors, students, patients, and visitors. Exception is made for UAB Police officers, civil law enforcement officers, private security in the employ of the University or members of an officially recognized team or course who are acting strictly within the scope of sanctioned activities. Law enforcement officers who are attending classes as students, and who are not in uniform, must keep weapons concealed.

Ha! It doesn’t matter how good a teacher the person is. In academia it’s publish or perish .. their published writings are FAR more important, pretty much the deciding factor, in getting tenure.

Sadly, as administrator at a research university, I know what you say is only too true. The reality is that only a handful of faculty are really doing research that is good enough to have a meaningful impact on society. For most faculty, they are much more likely to have a positive impact by teaching the sons and daughters of the taxpayers who pay their salaries, but a lot remain convinced that their obscure papers in obscure journals are more important than their students.

Okay, you are not an idiot for blaming it on Darwin, but the remark is just silly. I suspect you really know very little about Darwinian theory.

Maybe you should read the letter a little more closely, “While the law would permit a member of the university community who has the proper permit to carry a firearm on campus, the rules and regulations of UAHuntsville forbid the possession or the bringing of such a weapon onto our campus.” The last part is very clear that regarless of your legal status to carry a firearm they are still forbidden on the campus. There is not a lot of leeway in the language.

Sorry for the almost simultaneous posts. I guess we are in agreement that this campus does not allow firearms then?

Yeah, that’s the way I read it... as I said, I was copying it for the record, and even though I could have posted the picture link, pictures have a tendency to disappear at times, so the “text” won’t disappear from this thread... :-)

Well, not exactly. Usually after 6 years and he department decision is only the first rung in the ladder. All universities have higher levels passing judgment on it, usually a committee making a recommendation to a dean of one’s college or school within the university, often it then goes higher to an Vice-President Academic or Provost. You can be approved at a lower level and be denied by the top echelon, rarely the other way around.

Interesting to see what her students thought.... I was especially interested in the one that said “she didn’t talk about it in class, but she was a socialist”....
