Alan Simpson and Erskine Bowles to lead panel on reducing U.S. budget deficits
Washington Post ^ | February 17, 2010 | Lori Montgomery

President Obama will name Alan K. Simpson, a former Senate Republican leader, and Erskine B. Bowles, a top official in the Clinton White House, to chair a special commission to solve the nation's budget problems, administration officials said Tuesday.

Obama plans to make the announcement Thursday, when he intends to sign an executive order creating the 18-member panel, which will be tasked with drafting a plan to significantly reduce soaring budget deficits by 2015.

(snip)

Simpson, who informed Boehner and McConnell of his decision to lead the panel, said he has little patience for such talk, especially since Republicans did nothing to cut spending during the George W. Bush administration.

"If they don't participate, they run a real hazard in these times," he said. "The [Senate] election in Massachusetts was not so much a glorious Republican victory as a bunch of people who were damned mad saying, 'Why don't you get a handle on this stuff?' You can't get a handle on it if you don't participate."

You could just cut government and reduce taxes. This is like one of those fancy diets that never work when all you have to do is eat less and exercise.

I like Simpson. He seemed to be a real conservative bulldog who didn’t take much crap from anyone when he was in Congress.

He seemed to be a real conservative bulldog who didn't’t take much crap from anyone when he was in Congress.

Maybe.....so far from his opening comments, he seems to be chastising only the Republicans for "not participating" in 0bozo's propaganda circuses that are designed to do nothing more than to ridicule & lecture Republicans for not endorsing his commie pig socialism.

If Simpson had any real balls or intelligence, he should commence the panel by doing two things....

1) Tell 0bozo to stop his incessant campaigning & to go back to Washington DC & STFU

2) Wrap up the so-called deficit reduction panel by saying 2 things are needed without delay....tax cuts and most important to cut ALL Federal spending by 50% across the board immediately!

And then shut down the panel immediately for being stupid to ignore the obvious and another "gubmint" waste of money.

Simpson is a good guy. But the panel will be bogged down by Democrats who will only want to cut defense, space and related costs.

Since Obama’s goals is to bring the US to its knees financially (which he is doing), this is just more political theatre.

Government insurance and purchase of mortgages is over 90%. He is intent on taking over everything and giving away the store to his friends. Once financial armageddon comes, they will be multi-millionaires and safe.

Ah, how short the American memory.

Simpson? As in Simpson-Mazzoli...the last GENERAL AMNESTY BILL for illegals? Oh, yes, THAT Simpson.

Perhaps well-meaning. Perhaps a 'good guy'. But certainly, a man whose presumptive good intentions let loose the most recent flood of illegals into America.

\\ Now, 24 years after the fact, he -- along with one of THE most partisan 'Rats anyone has ever met -- are supposed to be 'advisors' on deficit reduction??

Bloody hell. Sell that crapola to their illiterate illegal alien buddies; don't try to sell it to anyone who recalls actual history.

Bah.

Simpson is also a strong supporter of the NEA and PBS. Don’t know many conservatives who share that point of view.

I assume that this special commission is being paid for by taxpayer money. Exactly how is this really reducing all U.S. deficits?

"I like Simpson. He seemed to be a real conservative bulldog who did't take much crap from anyone when he was in Congress."

Simpson was never a conservative at all, much less "a real conservative bulldog". Simpson was a liberal who worked continually for amnesty and entitlements for illegals. He was also publicly critical of real conservatives and made it a point to help liberal Democrats.

Todays Final Jeopardy Answer: It's a tie.
Who is the bigger political retread, Simpson or Bowles?
We could practically cure half the budget deficit if Hopey/Changey stopped spending money on all these useless panels and committees.

Here, all along I thought the problem was a vast, out of control entitlement mentality, combined with a deep corruption of buying votes with other people’s money that infected the very soul of our politics and society. Turns out we just needed a panel.

Simpson is all blow and no go. He hid behind the R title but did little for the Republicans.I was born and raised in Wyoming, but feel very little respect for Growling Allen.

I’m completely over this crap. Smoke and mirrors and more delay. Why do we need a panel to tell us how to reduce deficits starting in 2015?

We can reduce the deficit starting this fall - vote out all the congress critters who won’t cut spending NOW!

Vote ‘em ALL out!!!

Congress is charged with passing a budget, Barack. We don’t need no stinkin’ commission. David Obey runs appropriations. Rangel handles taxes. Give them a call and tell them what you would like.

I don’t agree with Simpson on immigration. But there are many who are duped by the benefits of immigration. In fact, we had a rousing discussion yesterday about France’s failure to realize that all the immigration they allowed to prop up their economy (after all the French decided to retire early!) leads to massive social disruptions and more socialism.

Pardon my french but what a crock of merde...

We do not need blue ribbon commissions with former now un-elected politicians.

All spending resides in Congress and they are not doing their jobs. Cut their pay, send them home and do across the board cuts if you do not have any testicular fortitude to do their jobs.

Looks like you are right. Here's from wikipedia. Not the Simpson I remember:

Alan Simpson, however, has been an outspoken advocate for access to abortion, gay and lesbian rights, and equality for all persons regardless of race, color, creed, gender, or sexual orientation. In an article in the Washington Post, the former senator wrote an article criticizing the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy stating " 'Gay' is an artificial category that says little about a person. Our differences and prejudices pale next to our historic challenge."

In 2001, Simpson became Honorary Chairman of the Republican Unity Coalition (RUC), a gay/straight alliance within the Republican Party. In this capacity, Simpson personally recruited President Gerald R. Ford to serve on the RUC's Advisory Board. The organization has since disbanded.

In 2002, Simpson got involved in the Republican gubernatorial primary on behalf of former Democrat Eli Bebout of Riverton, the seat of Fremont County. Simpson criticized Bebout's principal conservative challenger, Raymond Breedlove Hunkins of Wheatland, the seat of Platte County in southeastern Wyoming. Bebout defeated Hunkins but then lost the general election to the Democratic nominee David Duane "Dave" Freudenthal, a former United States Attorney appointed by President Bill Clinton.

How "gay" of him.

Or am I just imagining this?

0bama doesn’t want the responsibility. He’s passing the buck off to a committee.
