(WSB Radio) -- A seven-year-old girl is recovering after she was attacked by a pit bull mix. Cobb County Police Sgt. Dana Pierce tells WSB the little girl was walking home from school in front of the Valley View Mobile Home Park near Eastside Drive, when the dogl came after her. That's when a neighbor, who saw what was happening, ran to her aid, possibly saving her life.
"He went out with a piece of wood and actually struck the dog and was able to get the dog off of the seven-year-old girl," said Pierce. He then scooped the child up and took her to Kennestone Hospital. She was then airlifted to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston with a serious leg wound.
"Those injuries to her leg were originally thought to be very, very serious. Those injuries and her condition have since been upgraded," said Pierce.
The dog is in the custody of animal control and will likely be euthanized. Charges are pending against the dog's owner.
All this hue and cry and it turns out to be an American bulldog.

People who start in threads with personal attacks (that would be you, toots) should not expect to be given the same consideration as people who post reasoned arguments. *this phrase is what I heard a dog owner call her dog after it was growling at a child. Something to the effect "what did she do to you my (insert idiotic phrase here)?"
one report says a bulldog and one report says a pit bull. This report is just as likely to be wrong as the original.
Pit bulls generally don’t get over 100 pounds.

Like the jerks who have these things have insurance. in the early 90's there was a pit bull attack in an apartment complex near me. Some slut had picked up a redneck ahole for the night and he left his two pit bulls in the pickup truck. A woman my wife know was walking from her car to her apartment when the two dogs jumped her - required at least 4 plastic surgeries and the last time I saw her she still looked like her face visited a meat grinder. The guy got away because the slut didn't know his name. Neither he nor the dogs were ever caught. An excellent reason to carry as far as I'm concerned. When I'm out walking I have a fanny pack with a .357 taurus just in case.

Mocking? not at all. Not my words, but a quote from a dog owner who referred to her animal in just those very words - you can't make this stuff up. It is typical of the attitude of dog owners toward their animals and it was so disgusting that I couldn't help remember it.
Amstaffs which are the largest of the 3 breeds that get dumped into "pit bull" category* range from 50 to 75 lbs.
My dog once weighed in at 80 but he was over-weight.
I'm more careful of his weight these days and he comes in at 70 lbs
There is no way a "pit bull" should weigh 100+ lbs
*(although some sites like dogsbite.org are now listing American Bulldogs as "pit bulls" )

If every pit bull owner had your same good judgment, I believe that 90% or more of the problems with these dogs would go away. I think that there are several breeds of dogs that are actually more inclined to attack than pit bulls, but they lack the capability to do as much damage. We owned a West Highland White Terrier once, and he sure was a grumpy little devil (ironically, we named him Dante when we first got him as an 8-week-old puppy). He would bite in anger very often and with very little provocation. We contacted a West Highland White rescue group, and they were fortunately able to find a good home for him with an older couple that didn’t have any children at home. Now we have golden retrievers, and they’re working out very well for us.
It’s not just my opinion, its fact that they make good pets and are fine with kids. Dogs respond to training and treatment. Visit here

Read your link, the man who saved the little girl is a BIG hero..Hope things turn out ok for her...Being an american bull dog does not take away all the pit/pit crosses off the hook for what they do. Thank you for the story..
