Marco Rubio speech at CPAC conference brings conservatives to their feet
Washington Post ^ | February 18, 2010 | Philip Rucker

Marco Rubio, the 38-year-old son of Cuban immigrants and candidate for an open Senate seat in Florida, electrified thousands of conservatives Thursday morning with an impassioned defense of American exceptionalism. In the opening address at the three-day Conservative Political Action Committee conference in Washington, Rubio delivered a fiery assault on President Obama's economic policies and his administration's handling of national security.

"They are using this downturn as cover, not to fix America but to try and change America, to fundamentally redefine the role of government in our lives and the role of America in the world," Rubio said. "The good news is it didn't take long for the American people to figure this out."

A crowd hungry for new conservative leaders repeatedly interrupted Rubio's speech with standing ovations...

"Every time somebody starts yelling 'Marco,' I'm afraid they are going to be yelling 'Polo,' " Rubio said with a smile, "and that would ruin the speech."

He drew rousing applause and shouts of "Amen!" when he criticized Obama's record on national security.

"We will do whatever it takes, for however long it takes, to defeat radical Islamic terrorism," Rubio said. "We will punish their allies like Iran. We will stand with our allies like Israel. We will target and we will destroy terrorist cells and the leaders of those cells. The ones that survive, we will capture them. We will get useful information from them.

"And then," Rubio continued, "we will bring them to justice in front of a military tribunal in Guantanamo -- not a civilian courtroom in Manhattan."...

Rubio said ...

"I was not born to a wealthy family and yet I never felt limited," Rubio said. "I am privileged to be a citizen of the single greatest society in all of human history."

Decent article, considering it’s the Washington Compost.

More from his speech (not from this article):

“A few weeks ago I wasn’t sure I could make it here!” said Rubio, joking about the city’s crippling snowstorms. “Congress couldn’t even meet to work on business. The president couldn’t find anywhere to set up his teleprompter to announce new taxes!”

He accused Obama of “using” the economic crisis “not to fix America, but to change America.” The American people, he said, had “figured it out”: “From Tea Parties to the election in Massachusetts, we are witnessing the single greatest political pushback in American history."

Rubio looks like the real deal. A muscular defense of of our birthright of life and liberty. We need people like Marco Rubio. The rest of the Vichy Republican crowd can go to hell.

He also said:

“Americans want leaders who will come to Washington, D.C., and stand up to the big government agenda, not be corrupted by it. After all, the United States Senate already has one Arlen Specter.”

Natural born citizen...or naturalized? 100% organic without preservatives? Has anyone actually seen his birth certificate? Both his parents born in Castro's Cuba? Is he even eligible? Why won't Glenn Beck talk about this?

You know that only the POTUS has the “natural” requirement, right?

You wanna bet that if Marco Rubio becomes the kind of Senator a lot us conservatives hope he will be, that the birther-nutters will suddenly find all sorts of loopholes in the Constitution that would allow him to run for POTUS?

He was born in Miami. The guy is no Obama. His parents fled Castro.

IIRC, Congress requires Representatives and Senators to be citizens, with a specified duration of naturalization. POTUS on the other hand requires Natural Born Citizen status, with both parents owing allegiance to no other nation than the USA.

But I didn’t double check...so maybe I’ve got some details mixed up.

I cannot see the birther angle ever being anything but a fringe issue.
