We need to understand this guy like we understand McVeigh, Stalin, and all other perpetrators of evil deeds.

“Understand” does not mean agree, or excuse.

This is not how mentally healthy people react to what they believe (and reasonable people might in part agree) is government oppression. But some unstable people do, and that’s worth understanding.

Are you saying to "understand" why these people do what they do? if so, I don't know if we, as rational people, will ever "understand" that.

But if you're saying "understand" what causes these people to do that they do, then I have some room for that. However, IMO, no justification can be made by causes such as "government oppression" in the taking of innocent lives. People who work for the government are not the enemy.
