In the run-up to this week's Conservative Political Action Conference, right-wing Christian groups were incensed when they learned that the annual gathering of conservative activists would be co-sponsored by a gay Republican organization called GOProud. A collection of powerful social conservative groups threatened to derail the entire event with a boycottand lost.
The boycott attempt was led by Matt Barber of Liberty Counsel, a legal advocacy organization founded by the late Jerry Falwell. After hearing that GOProud would be an official CPAC co-sponsor and would host a booth in the conference's main exhibit hall, Barber wrote in an emai to conservatives around the countryl:
"I was disturbed to learn that CPAC is allowing the 'Republican' homosexual activist group GOProud to sponsor a booth at the 2010 conference. Among other things, GOProud advocates in favor of both 'gay marriage' and 'civil unions,' against pro-marriage constitutional amendments ; is pushing for the repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell,' and advocates in favor of federal 'partnership benefits' for homosexuals. This group is pushing a radical leftist agenda that is an affront to the GOP platform, conservatism and, most importantly, the Word of God."
CPAC ignored the threat, essentially calling the evangelicals' bluff. This gave the social conservatives a choice. They could pull out of CPAC, which holds an informal poll of Republican presidential contenders. The straw poll is widely seen as an indicator of how possible candidates are playing with the conservative base. Or, they could show up and hang out with people they think are an "affront to God."

Like “Mother Jones” cares.
Actually I suspect this group showed up at CPAC for just this reason, to give bad press to conservatives.
I expect to see these talking points all over the web in the next few days.
Gay=pervert
What consenting adults do in the privacy of their own home is their business....
They have absolutly no right to try to mainstream their perversion....
It’s Matt Staver, not Matt Barber.
Goes?
LLS
They should have boycotted. No bluffing.
Couldn’t possibly agree more! Well put.
The ONLY ones who this this is a big deal are the democraps and liberals...
how tolerant is that?
The “Reagan Revolution” was built on, for the first time, the unification of social, fiscal, and security conservatives. Reagan was able to show in principles and philosophy we have more in common than in difference.
That unity is eroding, and social conservatives are increasingly finding themselves the ones on the out.
Not good. Conservatives cannot win without all three. Ask Mitt Romney (missed the social conservatives). Ask Mike Huckabee (missed the fiscal conservatives).
And that is WHY the Conservative Establishment is just as CINO as the RINOS are to the Republican Party!
Next we'll hear that Mitt Romney is busing in his faux-con, neocon and Rockefeller Republicans to cheer him on and stuff the ballot boxes.
How to destroy it all. CPAC has jumped the shark
It’s a social issue that’s been wrongly politicized into a campaign issue that is consistently used against conservatives.
For some, it’s a make-or-break issue, and that tiny minority can make the difference in a close election. Why lose that political advantage for something that you can’t control, mainly someone’s lifestyle?
Politicians ~should~ be criticized for trying to dictate how much to exercise, what not to eat, to stop smoking, same concept.
Live and let live, stop making social issues into political issues, and stay the eff away from my kids.
And that is why SOCIAL-CONSERVATIVES should not support these bastards... They are just are morally corrupt as the Rats... It's politically convenient for them to take this position.
KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE BALL.
Nice photo montage.
Yep
OMG! What a poofter.
I’m just glad I don’t have children that I have to worry about growing up in world run by these “progressives.”
My only advice to them would be “don’t drop the soap while you are showering after football practice.”
