Shortly after winning their endorsement, Will Breazeale, candidate for United States Congress, sat down for an interview with the Political Action Committee, Citizens Opposing Incumbency. Here is the first part of the transcript from Will's conversation with the group's Executive Director Jeff Monks. The entire interview will be made available on the COI-PAC website next week (www.coipac.org).
COI: You mentioned you were really inspired to run again by Senator Richard Burr. What did you mean by that? Breazeale: Many people don't know that Burr ran for the House and lost. He didn't quit. In fact, it made him even more determined. He learned from his first campaign, and ran again two years later. He won that election and now is a U.S. Senator. In 2008 we did better than any Republican in 12 years in our district, despite the fact that our party got bloodied throughout the rest of the state. I've talked to Burr about his experiences and he's encouraged me many times about his story and it really inspired me to give it a go this time around.
COI: What most inspires you about wanting to be a part of the political process?
Breazeale: It's not about me being a part of anything. It's about giving power back to the people. Over the past decade, Washington has grabbed away a lot of power that once belonged to the people and claimed it for their own. That's just wrong. Countries run when people are allowed to prosper on their own. Not when the hands of a batch of Washington officials are controlling the gears. Being able to change that in some way is a really big deal for me.
COI: Is that why you are such a fan of the Fair Tax?
Breazeale: The Fair Tax is just one aspect to the philosophy. Obviously it is a big thing because it gets a ton of control out of Washington. At the same time it gives folks a lot more control over their money. Any time you can show me a plan that takes power from bureaucrats and gives it to citizens, I'm going to sign on.
COI: Your presumed primary opponent, Ilario Pantano has come out against it. Why do you think that is?
Breazeale: It's not really for me to say. I can only control myself. I'm disappointed he has refused to embrace it, but that's his business and he will have to answer to the voters on why. All I can do is tell you about what Will Breazeale stands for. And the Fair Tax is something I am 100 percent behind.
COI: I've heard the story about you saving the tax payers more than 40 million dollars while you were serving in Iraq. What's the truth behind that?
Breazeale: I observed some questionable equipment bought by the Iraqi Army with our money. Someone had to have the courage and the knowledge to stand up to the Iraqi government and persuade them to use their own money. It took months of learning and developing a plan and days of intense negotiations. These negotiations took me all the way to their Minister of Defense. In the end, not only did the US Taxpayer prevail, but the Iraqi Army as well. I showed them the light on how to fund their own army which built a trust between Baghdad and their units throughout the country.
COI: It's rare to find a soldier focused on how much something costs. Most are rightly concerned about just figuring out how to survive day to day. Why was it such a big deal for you?
Breazeale: That money was our money as a country. It was my money. It's my fellow soldiers' money. It's your money. That money belonged to someone. That person being the US Taxpayer. And if I could save it there, I would hope it could be used better somewhere else. Or even better, returned to the people from which it came.
COI: You also made headlines last week for blocking a Mike McIntyre earmark that could have totaled eight million dollars. Why is that something you're proud of?
Breazeale: I'm not proud of that for me. It wasn't about me. I was just the guy that spoke up in the room and put the ball in motion. The members of the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority are the real heroes there. Almost unanimously they decided to be leaders. The only way to dig ourselves out of debt is to stop these earmarks for pet projects. The Utility Authority could have voted to receive the money and then I'm just another guy in the room. They are the ones who deserve the credit because they are the ones that saved the taxpayers all that money.

You claim that “Ilario Pantano has come out against” the fair tax. This is not correct, in fact Ilario is on record stating that he is very much intrigued by it.
