REDLANDS--An active earthquake “swarm” that began February 13th is keeping parts of the Inland Empire on edge.
The shaking has been traced to an epicenter south of Redlands in San Timoteo Canyon.
Two quakes felt just before noon Friday were among the strongest at M3.4.

I would not say that california is ready to be claimed by the pacific, but there has been a marked increase in activity at both California swarms and in intensity to some degree.
Something to discuss and keep an eye on.

The Union Pacific main line runs right through San Timoteo Canyon. It used to be part of the Southern Pacific “Sunset Route” until the UP bought out the SP.
Both the areas are geothermic however it appears to be more tectonic related than volcanic.
The daily tally sheet for quakes is remarkable though, it is running about 50 percent higher than normal(by my calculations).

That is interesting. I did not consider rail traffic in the area?
I’ve been looking at the USGS site for about 4 months now. I’ve noticed quite a few along the fault that runs along the salton sea down to Mexico. Has there been a big one to relieve stress along this stretch the last 50-100 years?
The small fault lines including the one that transverses the Salton Sea are major players in the scheme of things.
It is a strong bet that quake swarms along these smaller fault lines could indeed increase the likelihood of a major quake along the San Andreas.
As for the history of that particular fault line I am not sure.

Those swarms are interesting. You can start a real panic by remarking that Rhyolite Nevada, is named thusly for a reason.
Is this going to interfere with this weekends Nascar races in Fontana? and there are always several small quakes a day at the Geysers...

Ya, the Geysers are very active however this latest swarm is by far and away above the norm.
The only quake Fontana is going to have is Kasey Kahne, crossing the finish line first!...lol
a Kahne win would be great as he is one pick on my FReeper League team...
I have only felt one so far. And it was because I was sitting down.

I live a short ways south of south of Redlands, just south west of San Timoteo Canyon.
In the last 1/2 hour there were five quakes. One was just over 3.0 the other four short of that. Did you feel any of them?

No but the rock had to get there out of a hole in the crust.
Why wouldn’t another one pop up near by?
